Stop Over Only

Stayed for a couple of mid-week nights in August. Site is well located and is easily accessible; however on arrival at just after 12pm the office was unmanned and we found ourselves second in the queue of outfits waiting to enter the site - the queue extended out onto the road and back up to the fast slip road exit to the A66. This is dangerous and is disturbing! Site is well maintained, but sloping which despite offering views does pose problems with outfit leveling - you will needs sufficient high rise ramps on most pitches. Unfortunately, there is nowhere to pick up a newspaper either in the village or at the site. The gents facility has been refitted and is first class. The ladies facility is adequate but nothing special and probably due next for the refit. The dog walk area was disappointing - a muddy stretch under trees parallel with the A66. However, on site there is a ball game compound, which in the middle of August and for the period of our stay was totally unused and wasted space. Considering the number of units with dogs the area would be better prioritised as a dog field rather than a play area. The location of the site does not attract children,as there is nothing in the local vicinity for them to do. ... and then there is the noise of the road - which is incessant and gives no let up throughout the night with two main trunk routes merging (A66 and A1). Even when pitched furthest away from the road, you need earplugs otherwise you will not get any sleep. It is not difficult to understand why the site exists - it is perfectly located for travelers who are looking purely for a stop over. If you want to explore the Yorkshire Dales, choose other sites which are better located.
