A warm welcome and encouragement

A very well maintained site run by the friendly and helpful team of Janet and Phil who, though very busy over our packed-out stay, still managed the time to welcome us and offer words of encouragement and details of the local area. Having recognised our relatively newness to caravanning, they offered advice, and after directing us to a pitch which suited our requirements, popped over later to see how we were getting on. There’s some goods walking from the local village of West Gilling, which also offers two pubs for some welcome refreshment, but do check opening times first, as both pubs aren’t necessarily open on the same days. It’s also worth co-ordinating your lunchtime with the timetable of the no 29 bus to avoid the long drag back up the hill to the site. Though don’t be alarmed when the bus turns left out of the village, and do make sure to ask to be dropped off “at the layby” the other side of the A66, from which you should follow the bridleway back to the site.

Absolutely wonderful staff ⭐️

We stayed here for the late May back holiday, a family of 4 plus Grandad. On arrival and prior to arrival (we got lost) the site wardens, who we later found out where relief wardens, could not have been more helpful and accommodating. They where friendly, chatty and made the campsite have a nice warm feel. The facilities where clean and well presented, the pitches generously sized and all very well maintained. We had a fabulous stay, but really would like to praise the staff over this weekend. They knew the site well, couldn’t do more to help and also brought some chat and cheer to all the guests. Can’t wait to return ⭐️

Above and behond

We use this site regularly. Just a thank you to Janet and Phil who went out of their way when we broke down with our towing vehicle,(broken spring.) The site is utterly immaculate and nothing is too much trouble for these wardens. This site is used a lot for overnighters just passing through which puts extra work on the wardens. There is traffic noise from the A66 but this doesn't trouble us.

1st stay at Richmond

We don't normally leave a review however the warden and his wife were so pleasant and went above and beyond what is normally expected. From helping us to select a lovely pitch to being so accomodating with our grandchildren. Watched the warden help so many people pitch up, very hands on, will definitely visit again. Toilets absolutely immaculate, very family-friendly will return in the near future.

First Trip Out

Having purchased our Motorhome in October 2020, then going into lockdown, this has been the first time we have been able to go out for an overnight stay. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. They made sure we found our pitch and settled in. The pitch was nice and level. Though the showers were not open due to the COVID restrictions the toilet facilities were incredibly modern and clean.

Easy access to the country

Having read previous reviews regarding noise from the road I can honestly say that what noise there was did not impact on our stay, from the moment we arrived everything went very smoothly from Janet meeting us at the barrier to welcome us in to Phil coming across to help / advise with the pitch and siting up, we had a lovely meal at the angel pub in gilling west and a nice drive over to pooley bridge, the wardens were always helpful and friendly making our stay really enjoyable ,as has been said before“ we’ll be back” Dave and Tracy

Brilliant staff, spotlessly clean site.

We are new to motorhoming etc and have been unable to use our new motorhome due to lockdown so as soon as sites opened up and we weren’t at work we wanted to spend sometime away in it. We booked this site as it is not too fa4 away for a one night stay, however we were slightly concerned about the strong possibility of traffic noise due to its close location to the A66 ! When we arrived we received an extremely warm welcome from the two site staff, they were so helpful and friendly , they explained the site layout and civic restrictions etc. They pointed out which pitches we could choose from, we chose one on the lower middle section in the corner, it turned out to be perfect, lots of space and very quiet. The staff keep this site spotless, the facilities were immaculate and the band system worked really well. We were also concerned that some reviews had said there were no walks from the site, we asked the staff about walks and once again they were extremely helpful and there are plenty of beautiful countryside walks not too far away, you just need to be prepared to walk a short distance on the adjoining road ( not theA66) to get to the village of west Gilling , then follow public footpath signs through gorgeous countryside. The staff also helped the next day when we asked if we could stay a bit longer, although they needed our pitch they pointed out where we could park on site for a few more hours. We will certainly be back. Thankyou very much to the staff .

Another successful visit

This site has to rate as one of the best in the U.K, this is down to the way the wardens operate and look after the site and the members. The pitches are wide, level and most give lovely views across the Swale valley. Road noise can be an issue, so a pitch further away from the A66 may be an option, but after a while one gets used to the road noise and is hardly noticeable. The wardens are lovely, helpful and always happy to have a chat and make themselves available should any problems occur. We have already booked a visit for 2021.

Great if you have a car.

We are a couple in our 50’s with a Motorhome. We love to walk and cycle. On arrival at this site we were greeted by very friendly Wardens who advised us that pitch 32 has the best views. Unfortunately we stuck out a bit so ended up in the cul de sac at pitch 60. Lovely and flat but very noisy. The lane behind is used as a rat run by speeding motorists from early morning to late evening. Not good if your a light sleeper. We did manage a walk and a cycle ride (Barnard Castle) but be warned...... its very hilly and there are no pavements. We also walked into Richmond which is lovely and we will return there if staying at a local site. We did want to catch the bus, but it only runs every 2 hours (29) and the nearest bus stop is in Gilling West (which means a walk down the road without pavements and with fast travelling traffic. Although we managed to walk to Richmond following the road (4 1/2 Very hilly miles) I wouldn’t recommend it, as a lot of it has no pavements. On site there is a small ball games area and dog walk. The showers and toilets are open and immaculate. The showers are lovely and hot with lots of pressure, just how i like it ☺️ So although this is a lovely site, i would say it was more suitable as a overnight stop off or for those with the use of a car, who can travel to Richmond or the Local villages without relying on public transport.

First Class Stay

Such a lovely site, conveniently located just off A66. Great location for visiting various areas of beauty. Richmond is lovely for a wander and Barnard Castle is 15 mins away. We travelled further afield to Fountains Abbey which is incredible! The White Swan in Gilling West is highly recommended, the farm shop further down the A66 is also worth a visit. The whole site is kept to the highest standard by two fabulous wardens - Janet and Philip. We haven’t come across such lovely wardens at a CAMC for many many years - just so friendly and helpful. The road noise is a down side of the site but if you choose your pitch with this in mind you can get a pitch with simply breathtaking views! We would highly recommend!
