Spent a couple of nights here with my 12yo son and his mate. It’s a great location with a wonderful view.
We walked along the cliff into Whitley Bay and got the bus back - bus stop just up the road - after visiting Tynemouth Castle.
The facilities are spotless - hopefully the new wardens next year will maintain the high standard.
The Delaval Arms just outside the gate is a superb pub, which every visitor should go to. It’s the sort of family run business that deserves support. The food is very good and the real ales brewed on site are top quality too.
We will certainly return
Single Night Stay
I used the site for a single night stay while visiting my daughter at Newcastle Uni.
I was delighted that, having had a stroke, I was able to reserve pitch close to the facilities. The wardens were so helpful in this respect.
The position of the site is excellent with views to die for.
Important to be aware that levelling ramps are probably needed on most pitches.
Highly recommend this site
Wardens Denise and Billy are so helpful and friendly which makes our trips so enjoyable. We have returned many times and have always felt at home .

The beach is lovely and so dog friendly as also are the cafes and bars in Whitley Bay.

A Northumbrian gem
We love this site, our second time staying here and just as we remember it. Site is kept nice and tidy and the site staff are friendly and helpful. Facilities are all good and I understand that the main block is being upgraded although the current one is good.
Great views of St Mary's lighthouse and close to the coastal walks. The site is quite exposed so can get breezy, not the place for an awning or sun canopy.
Easy travelling to experience the glorious Northumberland coastline or to visit Newcastle and it's rich history.
We'll be back again.
Wardens so helpful
We left our water cap on the site by mistake. I phoned up, it was found simultaneously (!) and saved in lost property. Thank you! Great site to stay on. Family visited and our grandson had a lovely welcome from all.
Great site. Great views.
Having visited the site several times, I was pleased to see , what was to me, a new roadway through it. It has nade access to all the ptches much easier.
The showers are certainly in need of refurbishment but are currently adequate. I understand, however, that there are plans for improvements in the facilities.
What makes the site so special are the easy road/cycling/walking access to Whitley Bay and Seaton Sluice (unfortunate name, but lovely and historic place). Looking out to the lighthouse at different time of day and in different reasins produces some inspiring and exciting views. It is a pity that this system won't allow me to add a photograph.
All in all, Old Hartley is a great base from which to explore Northumbria and Tyneside.
bright star in the east
We have stayed at Old Hartley many times and it has never failed to please. The facilities are now showing their age and do require refurbishment but, like the rest of the site, are kept spotlessly clean and tidy, by the hard working managers.
The convenient bus stop gives access to many wonderful sights and attractions in this fascinating part of the country. Most of the pitches have a bit of a slope and you have to be careful to chose one that suits your unit, but you can be assured that any pitch will give you fantastic views across the north sea and the majestic Saint Mary's Lighthouse. Whether you walk, cycle or use the bus there is an awful lot to explore. We will be back and soon.
Can’t get much better
Spent an eight day stay at Old Hartley wonderful view great coastal walks. Can’t beat this site, would highly recommend this site and the staff.
10/10 can’t wait to book again.

Nice site well placed for the local area
This was our first visit to this area and what a lovely place it is , nice walks along the cliff tops to St Mary’s island and lighthouse and a little further into Whitley bay. Everyone we met , both visitors and locals were very friendly and welcoming and the views from the site over the sea are great. We had a lovely time watching the activity on the sea including a cruise liner passing by on Friday night.
The pub near the entrance is lovely with a good range of hand pulled local beers and the food looked nice although we didn’t try it.
The only thing to be wary of is the approach road which runs in front of local houses and there are signs to ask you to be considerate towards residents whilst queueing. It’s a pity there is one resident who obviously doesn’t like it and was extremely loud mouthed and rude in his request for us to move slightly so he could get to his house. I didn’t react to his foul mouthed attitude, just brushed it off and got on with enjoying our holiday.
Great little site
Just stayed the one night at Old Hartley but will definitely be back. Last minute change of plan and we found ourselves at Old Hartley and really glad we found it. Great views and superb walking. Very close to a couple of pubs that did food and the best fish and chip shop in the area.
Really helpful wardens.
