excellent views
my first time here and was well impressed no matter which pitch you chose you got a sea view it's a bit different to other sites regarding your pitch size there's no awnings allowed due to lack of space but that's a small price to pay just for the location & views of st Marys lighthouse, the only thing i can suggest is that the C/C could do to spend a bit of money on the shower block they could do with a refurb there are only 3 showers and 3 toilets the showers are on the small side the shower curtain used to stick to me whilst having a shower but apart from that top soite.

Old Hartley CC Site
Having taken caravans to this site for over 20 years I have to say that the view never fails to impress and delight me. Apart from Tynemouth there is little of note in and around Whitley Bay worth looking at. The town has been dying for years due to lack of investment. The same can be said of the Old Hartley site. Many of the pitches are sloping and require a large number of wooden blocks to level the caravan. When it is wet most of the pitches require parking on the grass which often becomes muddy through continual coming and goings of cars and motor homes. The toilet block needs to be overhauled. Everything works, but it could all do with being replaced by new toilets, wash basins and showers. It could also do with being enlarged. The site wardens work very hard to keep on top of things, but really the whole site should be looked at to ensure all parking is on hard standing as is the ingress/egress for each pitch. Despite all this, the view makes it worth returning year after year.

Great Site
Agree with Keith and Margaret regarding the levelling of pitches - we'd been before so were prepared. We have to children aged 9 and 5 and they had a great time. the lack of 'play area' etc etc for the children is, in my opinion, a bonus as the children then make their own fun. The facilities were spotless (thank you). A 20min walk gets you to St. Mary's lighthouse either over the cliff top or along the beach at low tide. Fab little beach with plenty of rocky outcrops just 2 mins walk from the site. Pitches in the middle are a bit cramped but the ones on the front are perfect. New co-op supermarket very near (great for croissants in the morning). Avoid the chip shop on Good Fridays - the queue was massive all day! visit Delaval Hall (National Trust) and Walworth Castle (English Heritage). Great break, thank you.
Good - but could be excellent
The site is in a stunning position on the Coast, the site is clean, tidy and well maintained and easily accessible to the Coast paths and local transport.
The close-by Delaval Arms has a decent menu at a very reasonable price.
The price for large main courses, ample desserts, four glasses of red wine and coffees for two people came to £30.
The only gripe I have with this site is that almost all the pitches are not level and levelling blocks are required.
A few hours with a JCB, 40 tonnes of crush and run, a heavy roller, 20 tonnes of pebbles and a few days work would transform the pitches into excellent level areas that would be ideal for both Caravans and Motorhomes.
This site collects around £1500 a day when full during the High Season, and I imagine it is usually full at that time of year, and investing a proportion of the weekly income of over £10,000 would be of benefit to all Members for years to come.
Why it hasn't already been done is, in my opinion, either short sighted or penny pinching and could turn a good site into an excellent one.

Another fantastic visit
This was our second stay at Old Hartley. It is a really picturesque site with a lovely walk to the lighthouse. Beaches both ways either to Whitley Bay or Blyth are fantastic. Wardens very friendly and facilities are spotlessly clean. Brilliant view to enjoy if you have the chance to sit outside. Would thoroughly recommend - one not to miss.
Never Fails to Impress
We use this site perhaps half a dozen times a year as we live quite close to it. It always impresses. The views are just stunning. The wardens are so friendly and helpful they should be awarded for their manner and the superb way they keep this site - just perfect wardens!! If you haven't been here before, there is an excellent fish and chip shop within half a mile where the portions are huge - one does for two. The pub adjacent to the site serves decent pub food and well-kept real ale and has friendly locals. Dog-walking is brilliant, with it being so close to the cliff-top walk to the stunning sandy beach at Whitley Bay. Just don't tell too many people how good it is!!

Lovely site fabulous views cliff side so pitches are interesting but allow us to enjoy the views.

Our second visit here and again loved it. We were so lucky to see the eclipse from the site, moving. The bus service is brill you can even charge your phone while travelling. The trip to Newcastle is well worth it but don't forget Whitley Bay- loads of places to eat, can I recommend the Italian opposite Iceland £3.95 gets you a 2 course delicious lunch with great service. I see someone has mentioned the pitches being very sloping, yes some are but we have had no problems on our 2 visits, for me the fact there were no awnings were a bonus!
