AUGUST 2017
Recently spent 11 nights here. Very friendly welcome from the wardens who seemed surprised we were staying so long! We encountered many nationalities on site, often staying for a short while to explore Syke. Some of the pitches near the toilet block seem to flood in heavy rain but most drain well; the old block has been converted to a laundry with a very useful drying room together with a TV/games room for the campers. Only 6 TV channels are available on site via the pitch bollard but there is a good 4G signal. The views of the nearby mountains, particularly at sunset are beautiful. There are a number of walks to do from the site and we tackled both the Silver Peak next to the site; Glen Shiel and the Falls of Glomach walk. The drive to Fort William is well over an hour, but managed Ben Nevis with an early start. Eilean Donan castle nearby is a must, but get there early as it is perpetually busy; Plockton is also worth a visit. Syke is only a short drive away but only really managed to explore the southern part, visiting Armadale and RSPB Kylerhea. You can get the community ferry back to the mainland from Kylerhea for £15 (cash) if you don't fancy the windy road back again. There is a Co-op in Kyle which we used regularly and the nearest filling station is in Inverinate. We would certainly use this beautiful, tranquil site again.
