A lovely site - will return
This was our first visit to Meathop Fell and we were there for 4 days. We arrived on the second hottest day of the year and were very pleased that there was a serviced pitch available in the shade and the added bonus of being able to see the River Kent in the distance too. Our pitch was slightly sloping so we needed to use a ramp but others hear us had to lift up their jockey wheel too due to the slope. There was grass between the pitches as well as a large grassed area behind them which was ideal for sitting in the shade of the trees. The wardens were lovely and very helpful and everywhere was very clean and tidy. It was great to have 2 enclosed dog walk areas - one smaller one partially in the shade near the entrance and the other a large field near the grass pitches. This has long grass but wide paths had been cut through it in various directions so you could walk around easily but our dog could have a great time playing too. The toilet facilities were very good and the information room was well stocked. There were lots of hand sanitiser points around the site. There’s a food van on site Wednesday to Sunday who currently only does burgers (beef, chicken & a vegetarian one) due to a problem with his pizza oven. Whilst expensive (£24 for 2) they were excellent and the fries were really crisp. We had a takeaway from Fish over Chips in Grange over Sands which were amazing and well worth the drive. We had a lovely walk along the promenade in Grange. We decided not to walk the 3 miles with our dog as the road is quite narrow in places but we found 1 hour free parking along Kents Bank Road which is ideal for Tesco Express, Co-op, Spar or one of the other shops etc bakery, butchers as well as a walk down to the promenade. There are plenty of car parks for longer stays - the one at the railway station is £5 for the whole day. We got the train to Arnside (£4.30 for 2 return) across the viaduct. We walked up Arnside Knott through the woods (some sections are pretty challenging) and had a wonderful view of Morecambe Bay and the Lake District. We’d hoped to see the tidal bore from Arnside Pier but although we were there at the right time, the height of the tide was too low so we didn’t see it. You can hear the warning sirens when the tide is on its way in as the estuary can be dangerous. If you park in Sandscale Haws Nature Reserve car park (on the Barrow Peninsula) you can walk to the lovely Roanhead Beach and dunes next to the Duddon Estuary. You should visit Cartmel too - this is where they make the famous sticky toffee pudding and is a lovely (but busy) village with regular horse racing. We choose serviced pitches so for us the site was great but some non awning pitches were on tarmac and were a little unwelcoming- rather like parking in a car park or lay-by but they’d be fine for an overnight stop. The wardens sell basic items in case you’ve run out of something & you don’t want to drive to Grange. We loved our stay and will definitely return.
