Good as ever

Just returned from 5 day stay, our 3rd visit and just as good as we remembered. The site is very well looked after, spotless facilities and grounds. Great location for walking or visits to neighbouring towns/villages. We will definitely be back.

Great for the lakes

Myself, the family and our dog stayed here the second week in July and I can't fault the place. Friendly staff, huge and very clean toilet block, good information hut, play area for small children. The pitches are flat and generous with a good mix of open spaces and woodland setting. Great walks for dogs and there is a hotel/pub just a couple of minutes walk from the entrance to the site. A couple of minutes drive is the charming Edwardian town of Grange-over-sands and you are about half an hours drive from the Lake Windemere visitor centre, which is a great place for a family day out. I really liked this site and would definitely used it again.

Peaceful Haven !

Just returned from a lovely weekend at Meathop, the welcome from the wardens was very warm and friendly, they gave us all of the information we needed as we have never visited the site previously. We found a great hardstanding flat pitch so absolutly no gripes about the pitches not being level , we could only spot one or two pitches that were unsuitable for awnings as we meandered around . It is so peaceful and we slept like the proverbial logs , getting a shock when we saw the time when we did waken !! The grass is so well manicured and the flower pots at the service points are a really nice touch ! what is exceptional at Meathop is the dishwashing and laundry facilities as they are under cover and are 5 star, also the bathroom facilities are spotless!! All in all a lovely weekend in a peaceful setting to get rid of all the pressures of the working week !!!

Perfect for us but....

We couldn't fault site for our recent stay. Found a nice hard standing, flatish pitch , well protected from winds but with views northwards to hills. Shower block was immaculate during our stay with adequate number of showers and the usual hot water.  Why the but...? Well plenty of the pitches have had to be reallocated as non awning due to fire regs (good for MH's as most are spacious and flatish) and the prospect of finding a flat pitch for awning could be difficult at busy times. In addition the majority of grass pitches need to be made into hard standing as nearly all of them slope BADLY, both side to side and back to front. It also rains a bit in the Lakes so the grass pitches tend to be soft. As is usual on CC sites the play facilities for 10 y.o.+ are non existent. Why don't CC sites have a small clubhouse for indoor games or a central WiFi area? Somewhere for older children to go?  There is a small dog walking area and a not too busy road outside. Mind you it wouldn't make any difference to some owners what you provide as Tiddles will be allowed to Tiddle on the nearest empty pitch. WiFi wasn't great on parts of the site. Don't know about TV as we don't use it. The site is a quiet one and members can use the bar in the adjoining  hotel. There are also apartments for rent on this CC site. The Lakes themselves should need no introduction from me. If you've booked you know what's on offer.

Far From The Maddening Crowd

Just returned from four very pleasant nights at this site, despite the mixed weather. This is a great place to explore the South and Western Lakes being within easy reach of the main roads network with bus and train services readily available from Grange over Sands 2/3 miles away.  The site sits on top of a tree covered fell and consists of small groves across the hillside, some shaded and some more open with one central facilities block that contains ample facilities to cater for the site even when full, as you would expect the facilities are spotless. We were made to feel like long lost friends when we arrived by the wardens, who can offer an encyclopaedia of information about the area and are only too willing to chat. The office also doubles as a well stocked shop and also selling local produce (you must try the bacon, its yummy) and fresh bread and pastries can be ordered from a local baker, (also scrummy).  If you fancy a pint or a meal but don’t want to drive, look no further than the Woodlands Hotel next door to the site that has a public bar and restaurant, the beers good and the food is first rate and not too expensive.  Further afield, Cartmel, famous for its priory, race track and sticky toffee pudding (don’t be tempted to try it elsewhere, it just isn’t as good), Ulverston, home of the Laurel and Hardy duo and Arnside, noted for its bore once a month as the spring tide comes in, an interesting natural event but not spectacular.  There’s plenty to explore without jostling with other visitors in the more popular areas of the Lakes but still within easy reach of the whole area. Meathop Fell as a base certainly has a lot going for it and is well worth a few nights or longer stay.
