We have been to this site before and found the pitch choice poor, as expected, because of our late arrival on this popular site. On this latest occasion, our early 1.00 pm arrival ( as requested ) was stressful because of the queues that had already built up since noon. It was hectic and not relaxed in pitch choice. It was desperate, competitive stuff. No fault of the wardens who coped admirably with a difficult situation caused by time of arrival rule changes not fully appreciated by members ( new or long standing)? Who instigates these changes without realising the subsequent problems for wardens and other members? Maybe go back to all arriving at the nationally accepted noon slot.
Not a good start for our 5 day stay but having pitched up we settled into a routine of enjoying the space and quiet atmosphere within the site. However the very odd, very large motorhome with loud music, no doubt due to the amplifying effect of door/cab speakers of their music systems, did spoil things. Maybe more people should help make these members aware of the problem they may be inadvertently causing.
As always there is plenty to see and do in South Lakeland with walking, safe cycling and visiting numerous interesting places within a reasonable distance. Fellow members who were our neighbours with their friendly manner all added to the joy of being in this location but please get something done to sort out the confusion and pressure felt on arrival over the weekend period.
On a note of hope for the future I understand that over the winter a fairly large number of diseased ash trees with die back will be felled. This can only help add more light to many areas which can suffer from deep shade for long parts of the day.
Will we return? Of course we will as we have done before, but maybe with increased hesitancy.
relax
relax on this site is easy to do last time we were on was 1996 , always passing on way to coniston &.bowness on windermere etc but decided to try this site all i can say wasted 25years by not booking long before now this wont be last time all ready looking for other dates good thing is woodlands hotel only 5 mins away walking, meals and take away good service we were on service pitch spot been disabled makes it so much better ,,wardens doing great job we were there from 10 to 16 june weather made perfected thanks to all wardens and caravaners
Peaceful setting
This was our first visit and whilst only staying one night it was a very peaceful location and setting. The Wardens were helpful and polite and even recommended suitable pitches that were available. we stayed her on our way to Coniston and enjoyed its relaxed nature. We did a short walk from the site to the estuary and visited Grange's promenade. We certainly plan a return visit.
Lovely midweek stay
Phone call from manager asking what time we were do to arrive and had a pleasant welcome. Site spotless and great signage and information. We swopped from hardstanding to grass and it proved a challenge to get straight and level but it didn't spoil our break. Would defo book again.
One night to try out our campervan
Meathorp is a lovely well placed site for exporting the Morecambe bay coast line. It was our first night trying out the campervan experience. Kath at the reception checked us in and was very friendly and helpful and as the site wasn’t full advised us to check a couple of sites before choosing what we like best. We chose the grass site with distant views to Morecambe bay coast and next to the dog area, and the toilets. It was a perfect introduction. The sun shone till it went down at 9pm and we had our microwaved meal in our awning. After that we decided to take the dog for a walk in the woods just outside the site and ended up at the Woodland hotel for a drink in the garden which was perfect! We didn’t walk to Grange over sands but it can be easily and safely done on the back lane past the golf club. There are plenty of places to eat including, Pub food, the commodore, keg and kitchen, and fish and chip shop, Indian and Chinese restaurants. Theres the coop, spa and Tesco small supermarkets. For a treat I would recommend the Wraysholme ice cream farm at Allithwite ( check Facebook page). There’s also an ice cream parlour and a good bakery called born & bread ( see Facebook) also selling luxury burgers at Greenodd including an off-licence with an extensive choice of local beer and alternatives. The toilet system with rubber bands left outside the toilet on a hook is a good way to show if it’s full. The showers weren’t in use. And I didn’t have to queue either. The washing up area worked well. Also other campers were very friendly sociable and helpful! An excellent introduction to campervan life!
SPLENDID VISIT TO MEATHOP FELL
The site was near to full but I noticed no such problem with people booking in early as previous reviews have said (but if everyone arrives at 1pm there is bound to be a queue!). I only saw one vehicle enter the 'no entry' but in view of the position of his pitch, I can understand why he/she did so. There were no children around. Other campers were friendly. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Facilities were brilliant. They have a system of disinfected rubber bands outside the door to the facilities and you are supposed to hang a rubber band up as you go in and replace it into the disinfectant when you come out. That ensures no more than 6 people are inside at any one time. My husband had his band taken by someone else! So I think people may forget to put a band on the hook when they enter and then take someone else's band when they come out! But apart from that, everything was very efficient and clean. It's a lovely site, well set out, in a lovely location. We cycled and luckily we had glorious weather - unlike the rest of the country. We are new members and this was our first member site. We were thoroughly impressed and will return.
Good base for exploring the Southern Lakes
Meathop Fell makes a good base for exploring the Southern Lakes and there are some lovely walks from the site. Grange over Sands, Lindale and Crag Wood, which has lovely views across the estuary are all within a couple of miles of the site along quiet lanes or across fields.
The sit itself is interesting in that nearly 1/3 of the pitches are no awning ones, mainly gravel hard standings but some on tarmac. Quite a number of pitches are sloping and the hardstandings will challenge the most determined rock pegs. Pitches are arranged in various groups, so studying the site plan before arrival is worth considering. The earliest arrival time is now 1300 due to the narrow final approach. Sadly, some members seem to think this does not apply to them but is there for a very good reason.
There is a large fenced field where dogs can run around behind the toilet block and another smaller one by the entrance so our four legged friends will love being here..

Peaceful Week
This is the second time we have visited this site. We have stopped in two different areas which gave us a feel for it. The thinking out of the trees has been a great improvement as has the creation of two dog walking areas.
The site is conveniently located for exploring the southern Lake District and easily accessed. Please adhere to not arriving before the due time as the approach is tight.
Grange over Sands is lovely and Holker Hall is worth a visit.
A host of golden daffodils
This is the feeling we get each time we come to meathop fell site, which is beautiful each time we have visited some twenty years or more. Having visited recently the site is immaculate and all the wardens are lovely bending over backwards to ensure your safe, happy and very well looked after in these unsettling times. There has been some new additions which have updated the look of the site. I can never understand why people complain in life, you just need to think before you put out a negative karma thought.... Because it will come back to you and bite you on the bum!!!
A big thank you for all that you do.
