Electricity in need of urgent upgrade

The site is in a lovely location and very convenient for walking into Leyburn. Some excellent walks on the door step. The site have a lovely small enclosed dog exercise area and the pitches are quite quirky. It is advisable to ring the site beforehand if you have a long or extra wide outfit as some pitches will not be suitable. The wardens were excellent and very helpful. However, he is the real problem, the electricity on the site needs an urgent upgrade. I have stayed on this site many times before and never experienced a problem. However, during the day and night the only thing that could run on electricity was the battery charger and fridge. Anything else would trip the supply so I had to run everything else on gas. While you might expect this on a cold night, I find it difficult to accept during the day. You just need to look at the electricity hook ups to realise that they are really old now and require an upgrade. I do hope the Club sort this matter out because the site is really nice.

Disappointing

This was our first visit, we were looking forward to our 9 night break away. First impressions were very good. The wardens were friendly and helpful. We struggled to find a suitable pitch as they’re quite small for our caravan, and all the decent ones were seasonal. On reading the literature given from the warden I was quite surprised to read they had problems with the electric after 8pm, if I had read this before booking I wouldn’t have booked especially with it being so cold. unfortunately ours started tripping out and causing problems at 5.pm 🥺 on the third day I’d had enough!! We went to see the staff and explained we wanted to leave which wasn’t a problem. They were very understanding. I was shocked when they told me about other campers leaving their heating on in an awning all day and night even when they went out!!! This is unacceptable and selfish. I will be getting in touch with the club to complain about the site being so dated. It’s such a shame because this all reflects on the wardens and it’s out of their hands.

Response from the Club

Thank you for your review. The site staff have been in touch as they would like to clear up any confusion and reassure members that while occasionally the voltage on site may dip due to cold weather or overuse, electricity does not cut off after 8pm.

Wardens really made it work

Lovely quirky site which we have been to before, we were a little concerned with all the covid paranoia about, especially as some wardens were being compared to the camp guards rather than wardens (perhaps unfairly, well I hope...) We need not have worried the wardens were friendly and in no way over zealous, totally appropriate which made what could have been tense work well. There is plenty to see and do around and about though with pre-booking it's best to do your research ahead. The facilities are a little tired and the walk along the road to Leyburn unpleasant given all the traffic. Overall though a different and characterful site in a great location.

Lower Wensleydale

Lovely secluded & peaceful site, not too far from Leyburn, with the added attraction of the Wensleydale Railway running alongside the site. Facilities are a little dated, but acceptable and priced accordingly. We visited late September/early October and the weather was mostly kind, but will be back next Summer when it will hopefully be a tad warmer.

Just returned from a one night stop at this site, we used this as a stopover on our return visit from Old Hartley. Unfortunately we had torrential rain throughout Saturday, including overnight which prevented us walking into Leyburn. We have stayed at this site on three previous occasions. We love the site and its location. The Covid rules worked very well. The wardens did an excellent job and we received a warm welcome. The only comment was that the trees close to a number of pitches could do with pruning. But I strongly recommend this site.

Great site for dales access.

We have visited this site several times previously. In spite of reduced facilities due to Coronavirus, this is still a site worth a visit. Sad that the Wensleydale railway trains are not operating, as this usually adds even more interest to the site. My only complaint was that some drivers seem totally unable to drive their vehicle at 5mph. We had grandchildren with us, and had to continually keep watch for Mercedes estate who continually drove well in excess of the speed limit onto the upper level. We did not see much of the usual resident Peacock on this visit, and the Ducks seemed in short supply for some reason. Still a great site to visit.

Very good value quiet site with very friendly wardens

(Not sure why "good for families" is a required field as many of us won't really be able to comment meaningfully on that!) Anyway, first time at this site and found it very peaceful, in a handy location with good clean facilities, well arranged for these covid times, and friendly wardens. The wrist band system for using the loos and showers seems a good idea (ladies its 6, mens its 4, with hooks by the door and plenty of hand san) Not much night-time lighting (good!) so quite a countryside feeling. Some of the pitches did seem a little close together and some maybe on the small side, but that's because it's set in an old quarry (now with trees etc) so it's not as "regimented" pitch wise as some sites can be. The access road is very narrow.

Excellent

For me probably the best club site on the network. Very sensible approach to covid without having it rammed down your neck, wardens very okay about it without being anal like some are. Beautiful mature trees. Very peaceful thanks in part to the responsible dog owners that didn't allow their dogs to bark. Some sites are unbearable with barking dogs. Night time was a revelation with good darkness by sensible not over the top lighting. Many sites are lit like a circus. Great 8 mile bike ride from site to Coverbridge, Middleham and up to Leyburn, many great pubs on route. Nice pub at lane entrance for a beer,no food but good atmosphere. I don't understand why some pitches were put so close to one another so as to not allow an awning, I understand fire regs. But this is a club not an outright commercial business out for every penny. I know it is vital to make a profit but given the net worth of the club it is a shame the number of none awning sites could be eradicated by providing more room. Less pitches, give us a bit more room? not possible I know but on future plans perhaps or when carrying out revamps. Make them all awning pitches! would save a lot of faff. Gorgeous site, don't bother going onward to Hawes
