Fabulous stay

We enjoyed a glorious stay here over the bank holiday. Leyburn is a good 30 minute walk from site but a lovely village with every shop you could wish for, including cafes, pubs, banks, restaurants etc etc. Lots of lovely places to visit in the area mean you are not short of things to do. Catterick Park Run is close by too if you like to run! Wardens were fantastic and whilst showers were clean, they were in need of updating. Pitches need attention too, a bit rough round the edges and many too small to fit car, awning and caravan on. Pub also in easy walking distance although it's not open all day so check open times before you set off.

Lower Wensleydale

A site in a good location to enter and explore the dales and beyond. Helpful warden allocated a pitch suitable for my wife as she has mobility issues. The ehu post needs some attention as it wasn't firmly fixed to the ground and showed signs of wear which I suspect could be an issue if it is left as it is. It is quite apparent that this is not a club owned site as the facilities fall shirt of the usual standards Entering the site is via a steep single carriageway hill that has a sharp bend mid way. There are signs clearly stating that single vehicles give way to towing vehicles. On the day of our departure I set off up the hill and took the bend when I met a bin wagon coming down the hill. Initially the bin wagon driver refused to reverse and allow me to pass on up the hill. After a short while he took it on board that I was not going to move and so he created a space by slightly moving over for me to pass. On my return home I emailed the incident to the club only to be told that I should get in touch with the bin company and report the matter. My point being is that the signs on the approach seem to be only directed to club users, and should you have a similar experience don't expect any support from the club. In conclusion I shall probably not pay this particular site another visit.

Lower Wensleydale Site

Great to visit this site again after not being there for a few years. Very friendly and helpful wardens who work very hard at keeping the site clean and tidy. Toilet block is a bit dated and could do with an upgrade but again it is kept spotlessly clean. The site is very handy for walks around the area and Leyburn is ony a gentle stroll away. We had a lovely few days just enjoying the scenery and good weather. Pity that some members think it is OK for their dogs to foul the footpaths or empty pitches and not bother to clean it up, but that seems to be the norm on a lot of sites these days, I am sure if they were fined they may think twice, these members would no doubt be the first to complain if children were running around the site.

Lower Wensleydale

We have just returned from a very pleasng stay at Lower Wensleydale. With a little concern following other reviews of the site with its difficult approach, hills, single track road with blind bends..... Advice - read the directions closely in the member guide and on the internet. Switch off the sat nav! If you're approaching from the A1 then the roadworks make this interesting. The best turn off is Bedale. We continued on to Catterick and ended upon the wrong side of Leyburn and satnav wanted to take us up a single track road, which i confess we tried until a farmyard was found then we turned around headed into Layburn and followed the road through to Harmby. Then you see the Pheasant Inn turn left and you encounter the 'dreaded approach road' Over the bridge, turn sharp left, pull to the left slightly. Observe the road coming down and if clear proceed. Before you know it you're entering the site on the left. The road into the site is again single track, use the mirrors positioned to see around the corners and if you obey the rules and arrive after noon then you won't meet another unit coming towards you! Anyway you will of course have plenty of time to stop if you are oberving the 5mph limit won't you?? The site is managed by the Club not owned. Yes it has dated facilities but the wardens do an ace job here keeping everything clean and tidy - no complaints at all. We were met with a very firendly greeting and as it was a BH pitches were limited and we were advised what should be (and were) free. Found a good pitch in 44 being in the sun which was out for the week too. Loads of wildlife including a Peacock - and something which liked our dog biscuits in the awning over night! All in all its a brilliant site to explore the area. The local pub is good for real ale - no food here - and no till just a box for the money. Cross over the main road and see the waterfall. We walked to Leyburn station and had a day out on the Wensleydale Railway which is recommended - the walk is along the main road on a pavement - not scenic but practical.. Tip - you can walk out of the site via a permissive path avoiding the need to walk up the hill the way you drive in. One facilities block on site where you find all you will need to find so if you struggle with walking pitch somewhere near it! All in all a brilliant site in a brilliant position for the Dales and its attractions run by wardens who are as i like them - friendly and informative then leave you to enjoy without the regimented authority of some. We will return here without a doubt!

Lower Wensleydale review

We stayed at the site for 6 nights in August. We booked in advance, but found only a few pitches with awnings available. The site is set in a heavily wooded old quarry area close to Leyburn. Many of the pitches are quite shaded, some most of the day. Access to site when towing, a little disconcerting due to steep hill and bend. Site facilities are ok, clean, but a bit cramped and dated. Site staff very helpful. Although within walking distance of Leyburn, the walk is along a busy A road, so not so pleasant. There is a nice pub within close walking distance, but check opening times. The site is in a good position for visiting the dales and many places of interest by car, although we found walks from the site not so inspiring. Site good for proximity to Wensleydale Railway for railway enthusiasts.

First visit

We visited in mid August for 4 nights. It was our first time in this part of Yorkshire, and was exactly what we had hoped for. The site is very nice, and relatively quiet being far enough away from the main road. The non-awning pitches are not very big, but this was not a problem for us in a small motorhome. Leyburn is within easy walking distance, and offers a good choice of cafes, pubs and restaurants. The area is great for walking, and a walk along the River Ure to the village of Wensley was particularly pleasant. NB - It is worthwhile having an OS map so that you can create your own walking routes, but failing that there are maps on sale at reception. A special word of thanks to the site warden (unfortunately I did not get his name) who lent me the bucket when we discovered a water leak in our motorhome. It allowed us to continue our holiday without too much inconvenience.

Two nights returning from Edinburgh

As it's a long drive from Edinburgh to West Yorkshire we decided to stop off on the return journey having previously tried Barnard Castle which is a bit further north. The site is 20 minutes off the A1 and easy to find. A rather narrow entrance leads to an interesting site on various levels. Wardens were very friendly and very helpful in advising on pitches. As it's a 'club managed' site we were not sure what to expect. Pitches vary in size and are often uneven with a number in a lot of shade. The only toilet block was of the usual clean standard but is a touch dated and a bit of a walk from the far end of the site. The lighting at night on the site is not what we've seen elsewhere although this is mentioned in the club handbook and was not a problem. There are lots of walks in the area including two into Leyburn which is a typical North Yorkshire market town. It's fairly busy traffic wise with a good selection of pubs and shops. Certainly a peaceful site with lots to do in the locality including cycling if you enjoy hills!

Good base

Our first time at this site, wardens were friendly what we saw of them. Narrow road down to the site you drive round the back of the reception building then you book in. All pitches on different levels most under trees the pitches not to clubs standard size felt a bit on top of each other some people couldn't park there cars at the side of there vans. Toilet block only one and it's at the reception area it's very clean but needs a refit old building. Walks from the site we did find one walk were we could let our dogs off the lead but with the fields having sheep in you can't. Short walk into the village lovely little village with a good mix of shops..
