5 Star site but never again

This is a 5* site, well maintained, clean, relaxing with friendly and helpful staff. However, and there is always an however, the access road is a potential death trap. Turning from the main road onto Lane End, a narrow road. You travel some 100 yards and you have to turn left onto a very narrow lane, similar to a farm track that has had a tarmac surface put on it, the problem is that the left turn is a blind bend with high banks and hedges to the sides and it is at the top of an incline. We were returning from a trip to the local supermarket one afternoon and were just about a car's length from the turn when a very large 4x4 estate tractor came round the bend at speed and cutting the corner. The tractor missed us by no more than 3 feet, the tractor driver was of course wearing ear defenders so there was no way he could have known we were there. This was bad enough but immediately behind the tractor were three fully laden 56 seater coaches driving nose to tail at speed and they also cut the corner. Had we been some 5 seconds earlier there could have been a serious 5 vehicle accident with a potential for a casualty list of over 150 people. We left the site early on the Saturday morning, about 7.30, and even then there were estate staff driving along the road as if they were Lewis Hamilton and they were not pleased at having to slow down and give way. This is an excellent, quiet site, with helpful and friendly staff but for us the access road makes it a no no.

I thought this review by MalcolmN, is very misleading indeed. How he/she found the approach road so bad, that visiting the site is not going to ever happen again for him/her, is most bewildering.

We read this review and almost cancelled our booking. We have been to several CL's where the roads are that narrow, the grass verges clean the side of the van as we travel up/down them. We have always got in and out. To date, not a single dent or scratch have we had to suffer.

Now I admit, that like most roads, there are a couple or so pinch points. Very few sites we have ever visited over these past 35 years, have a dual carriageway leading up to them. Looking ahead, planning the road to ensure you can get to where you are going, is a basic requirement of holding a driving licence. I would never find myself on a tight bend with a huge tractor or a bunch of coaches bearing down on me. Pulling into the side and letting them past, will always be the better option. We met several tractors and trailers, of just about every size, we had no problem whatsoever. We only met two double decker buses, again no problem. So in closing, if you are a super unsure and nervous driver, you might find the bends a slight worry. But let's be fair here, however to you get off your drive or out of the caravan storage yard. Please do not let this poor review put you off visiting the Longleat site. It will be your loss, not anyone else's.
