So tranquil

This is our first visit to the site in June 2022. We were slightly apprehensive after reading some negative reviews about the approach road, but to be honest, there has obviously been some work done on the road and it really isn’t that bad with potholes at all. There are a few, but nothing too serious. We arrived around 2pm and there were no issues with oncoming traffic at all. The road is narrow but if we can all make an effort not to arrive early, things do work better for all concerned. We received a very warm welcome to the site with no queue at all and settled onto our pitch. The tranquility is just amazing. We don’t feel like going anywhere yet, as sitting outside listening to the birds singing and just absorbing the peace is just perfect. All pitches are on gravel as grass wouldn’t grow under the canopy. This also contributes to the peacefulness of the site as there are no lawns being mowed. The site layout seems to encourage people to drive fairly considerately, although the 5mph limit is still ignored by many. Difficult to understand why, but it seems that upon arrival, racing around to find a pitch is more important than worrying about the fact that someone else is trying to relax next to the “racetrack”. There is a walk to a nearby farm shop where you an purchase various necessities and raw milk. You can even watch the cows being milked. The shop is rather expensive, so we opted to travel the short distance into Kendal where you have a choice of Sainsburys, Morrisons, Aldi and Asda. The site is arranged in beautiful little alcoves, so although it’s quite a large site, you rather feel like you are on a small, exclusive site. There are also some pitches virtually on their own or very small groups. One couple described their pitch that was all on its own as the “Honeymoon Suite”, which made us smile. The forecast for our stay is pretty warm with temperatures in the mid twenties, so the shade from the trees is proving very welcome. There are pitches where you have more sunshine than others, so if you want some sunshine versus none, I am sure the wardens could help you out with advice. However, if you look at the site from Google Earth, you can see that the forest is pretty luxurious and you can barely discern there is a campsite. So either embrace what this site does offer or perhaps consider alternatives. The site will obviously feel very different as the weather changes, so maybe keep that in mind. Sitting outside on a warm summers day listening to the birds singing will probably be different to a really wet day, even more so when you are surrounded by trees. There are some really well located serviced pitches if you don’t mind the additional charge. Overall we are really pleased we have tried this site and we will definitely return.
