Needs Work

We visited this site about three years ago and it was looking tired and scruffy. Sad to say, it's looking worse now. I spoke to the wardens about it because virtually every pitch looks threadbare, covered in weeks, with a marked lack of gravel and evidence everywhere of temporary patching. Our pitch - 44 - was so thin as to be like rock underfoot. The pitch next door might as well have been classed as grass. Apparently the wardens have no control over decisions to spend money on maintenance, which means the Area Manager has to approve expenditure. I took multiple pictures - which I can't upload here, it seems - which show what I mean, though ANY member of any longevity will recognise that in fact the Club's pitches are gradually deteriorating anyway, this at a time when pitch prices have markedly increased in cost and now appear to drive ever-more keen "special offers" to entice custom. If you can get the Regional manager to visit, send him down the road to the Wareham Forest Commercial site. That is an example of what the Club USED to be like. Meanwhile the "free" wifi at 1mb is patently worse than uselss, the pay-wifi is horrifically expensive (I didn't even try it here, but my last stay at Merrose I nearly near fainted at the £5.00 a DAY per device. This is the third - at least - incarnation of wifi at the Caravan Club and each has become progressively worse and more expensive than the last. The facilities were fine, the location was our principal reason for the visit (though we'd normally use the site at Haycraft, which is currently closed) and the area generally is worth a visit. I'm afraid the Club - which is hugely profitable, has enormous cash reserves and a very strong and growing balance sheet - has rather lost the charm and quality which so impressed us in the "old days" - but it really does need to regain both if they are not to lose yet more caravanners to commercial sites and CL's.
