On arrival met the warden ,happy smile face ,lovely chat explained every thing we need to no , Their is something about the site and surrounding area ,so peaceful ,go as far to say it's the best location for us ,
Just arrived home from Garlieston and missing it already. We have been going there for three years now, at this time of year, for the duration of the Wigtown Book Festival - just 6 or 7 miles away - and for 10 days the programme is quite remarkable and highly stimulating.
The caravan site is pure escapism, a real delight, surrounded by friendly local residents. No awnings allowed on pitches along the harbour side, but with an awning there are good views from most pitches anyway.
Garlieston is a very small purely residential village so we didn't expect there to be any supermarket or General Store - and there isn't. Wigtown is the nearest for general shopping and Newton Stewart has a couple of supermarkets and is only 14 miles away. But the local Inn serves very good meals and is so popular that booking is sometimes required.
Can't wait till next year.
Warm, friendly welcome as usual from Christine and Martin. We love this site and also Garlieston itself. There is a lovely little harbour, a shop, a pub serving good food and great walks and other nearby places to visit. We went to Wigtown to hear a couple of authors at the annual book fair, and to Whithorn and Port William. Can't fault the site or the wardens - congratulations to them for coming first in the flower competition. The display has been fabulous for the last three years we have visited. Enjoy the awards do, Christine and hope to see you again next year!
A wonderful welcome from the wardens, who couldn't have been more helpful and a pitch on the harbour side - bliss. The view was great although I can imagine with more severe winds it would be quite interesting - we had 40/50 mph gusts and that was more than enough excitement. Not really for families as there's not really a great deal for children to do. The
Harbour pub serves good food and it's well worth a trip to Whithorn to see the Priory and Museum.
The only reason I haven't given the facilities full marks is that they seem a little tired, that said, they were absoutely spotless.
My partner and myself have just returned from this lovely site we stayed 19th-27th September. We had a really relaxing time, the wardens were very friendly and helpful and kept all the site facilities and grounds immaculate at all times. We had a large hardstanding pitch on the bay side and enjoyed fantastic views. The site and the village are both so peaceful and tranquil and we found lovely walks from the site and out in the car of the surrounding area. We want to come back to this lovely site again in the Spring/Summer sometime as we didn't get to see and do all that we wanted to do. I would highly recommend this site if you enjoy peace and tranquillity. Thankyou to the Wardens for our lovely stay. Ps The Harbour Inn in the village do lovely meals and a very friendly pub
Just got back from 5 days at this lovely site on the harbour front. The wardens Ann and Martin work tirelessly to keep the site spick and span, and all done with a smile. The flower beds around the site are beautiful and well tended. The facilities are absolutely spotless - if a little old fashioned, but plenty of hot water. The site is in two separate areas on each side of the road, but don't let the road put you off ,it is limited to 20mph and only local traffic passing and very quiet at night
I would advise that you take provisions as there is only one very small shop - the post office really - Sainsbury's and `Aldi in Newton Stewart about 14 miles away.
The village is very quiet - a lot of holiday homes. There is one pub which I believe is open all day and serves average pub grub - NOT gourmet! The landlord and staff are very friendly.
The area is very quiet, not really much to do - no big tourist attractions - but beautiful coastal walks from the site and further afield. Further north is the Galloway forest which has amazing walks and cycle paths and visitor centres. Well worth a visit.
A very relaxing site with very pleasant wardens, we enjoyed our stay very much.
.
With a pitch on the bay - the caravan was like a bird hide enjoying the birds along the waters edge, whilst being lulled to sleep by the sound of the sea, or listening to the wild rain/wind. Walks from the site along the coast are lovely - the beaches are rocks, seaweed, pebble with some sand - not the golden sand type - but attractive nontheless. A good leg stretch will take you to the 'Isle of Whithorn' at the tip of the peninsula, and the woods are full of birdsong and the odd red deer. Driving North there is the Galloway Forest to explore. The site itself has excellent facilities; copious amounts of hot water; and extremely welcoming & friendly wardens. Pack food basics - the post office doubles as a small shop and that is all!!! A meat van and a fish van come to the site on a Tuesday. Local pub is very friendly/takes dogs.
We arrived in mid afternoon and there was only a choice of two pitches in the walled garden. The pitches on the harbour side looked very small and close together so luckily we wouldn't have wanted to be there. No trees or hedges between pitches. The whole site feels cramped. A long outfit in some of the walled garden pitches would be very difficult to park. We don't use the site facilities so cannot comment. The village pub, while friendly, was a disappointment as far as the meal was concerned. Sunday carvery with overcooked beef, no crackling with the pork. and synthetic apple sauce was not what I had expected from previous glowing reviews. However we did enjoy the area and particularly walking along the coast and spending the afternoon on the beach. If we were ever to return to Scotland we would be unlikely to choose that site again.
I booked online and turned up at 1710 hrs on the allotted day after a four hour drive. I was met by a very grumpy couple in full caravan club regalia who told me they were just about to have their dinner as booking in finished at 1700. The booking information showed no time of arrival and 1710 is not exactly the middle of the night.
The location is the best thing about this site it is right on the harbour side. Having said that the pitches are quite close together and there are the usual rules about parking in a certain way etc. The toilet block was very clean, though perhaps not enough showered and cubicles for the number of people staying there.
This was our first experience of a full club site and we won't repeat it. The staff moaned about bins being full and generally were like black clouds over my long weekend.
We know the area well and love it, I would certainly recommend visiting the area in general, but find somewhere else to stay.
We live only 40 miles from this site but strangely enough we had never stayed - an omission that we regret and we will put matters right by returning frequently. It's a delightful spot, important historically for the construction of the Mulberry Harbours which were used to facilitate landings in France etc during WW2.
Close to Whithorn, believed to be the place that Christianity was brought to Scotland.
Excellent dog walks and the Harbour Inn only 200 yards away serving good food and real ale - what more could you wish for.
