Walking in heaven!

This site is a walkers paradise with direct access on to the coastal footpath. The downside is the bus service is very infrequent so you have to consider using a car too.  The nearby beach is ideal for children, lots of sand and safe swimming most of the time. There are other child friendly attractions on offer within reasonable driving distance too. Another plus for dog owners is that it's surprisingly a dog friendly beach. It's a shame that a small minority risk loosing the status by not cleaning up after their pets. As for the site itself, it's maintained to the usual high CC standards, the staff are friendly and helpful.  We don't use the shower block facilities but I was told they are due for refurbishment soon and it's needed. What we do require is hardstanding so we can leave the awning ground sheet down and there is a shortage of them from what I could see. I wasn't too keen on the layout were we were either as it seemed we were camping in a car park for much of the time. Access on to pitches can be hampered by parked cars unless you have a motor mover to do the job for you. Overall a nice enough site, we felt a week was long enough to cover all the local coastal paths but if you have other interests you might feel differently.

Freshwater east

It would be difficult to better the location of this site, it being within a short walk of a really lovely beach. However their is little else within walking distance of the site and the very hilly nature of the surrounding roads make cycling from the site very demanding. Also the wash blocks at this site, while adequate when the site is quiet, might prove inadequate when busy. In addition the shower cubicles in both facilities blocks are very small and both blocks could do with updating and extending.

A pleasant fortnight

We spent the first two weeks in August here.  We wondered why we'd never been when our children were young given the proximity to a nice beach. It's quiet and if you have the weather there are lots of really nice places nearby.  Having a dog there is plenty of space to take him for exercise.  The dog walk needs fencing from the play area however as others have said. The toilet blocks are tired but it looks as if they will be improved.  The internet was poor where we were and given that there is no mobile coverage this is a weakness. It improved a little after a technician appeared to visit the site.   The wardens were fine in my experience.  If it gives a time in the book I'd rather it applied to all having been irritated to arrive in the past as per the instructions to find others who ignored the guidance already there and most pitches taken. All in all we enjoyed our visit and will return..

Diehards on the grass

We arrived in sunshine to a warm welcome from the warden on duty.  We chose a sunny grass pitch as the hard standings seemed very close together and most were quite difficult to reverse  on to with a larger than average caravan as parking is on both sides of the road at right angles to the pitches.  we paddled in the mud during a very wet two weeks but did manage to leave without getting stuck.  This is a great site location wise but agree with others re queuing for showers and toilets.  We had a couple of communal living gripes that we had not encountered elsewhere including non club sites re feral children getting into mischief Around the site and in the toilet blocks while groups of  parents ignored and carried on partying round the bbq and a lack of responsibility for cleaning up own mess when using the facilities.   We agree with other comments that arriving on site early should be at the discretion of the wardens and not a given.  Overall a great holiday location.

Despite the weekend weather a lovely weekend

Although this site is but an hour form home ,it is  ideal for a quiet getaway  setting in Pembrokeshire ,close to the beach ,yet a  quiet gorge location.( no phone signal-yeah!).

It was a great pity that the club had to cancel 60 caravans booked onto grass pitches because of the rain soaked soft surfaces . Credit to the wardens though  for managing the situation very well. This site is still a Jem in West Wales!.

Upgrading of grass pitches  to hard standing is under way this winter and a new toilet block-well done CC. JH

Three nights prior to ferrying to Ireland

We stopped here prior to getting a ferry from Pembroke Dock to Ireland but came for three nights to look around. The site is perfectly placed for access to the beach which was good for our dogs as it was for other folks children. The site is very quiet and clean. Close is a holiday complex with a bar restaurant but at the time it did not have a drinks license.... Locally there are plenty of other places to go to. I would willing return.

Refreshing Freshwater

First lay to rest some of the below rumblings. Those reading this will have access to the web, so a quick google maps and street view will show the lie of the land and if you have sense checking out the ordinance survey map of the area would help guide before booking. I do every time, use all resources.  The site lies in a valley, a steam runs in the valley, and there is a nearby marsh.  Yep its gets wet, and yep if you are not on a hard standing pitch it will get boggy.

We arrived at a little after 1200, which is when you should arrive. We in fact left at 1200. Arrive early at any club site and take your chance.  The recent run of poor weather meant that most of the grass pitches were out of action. We got a phone call advising this, but we still went. It was a case of one off one on. Standing water on the grass pitches could be seen, it just was not draining away(see first para). On leaving even the hard standing pitches had water just inches below the top level of the gravel – I hope this ends those that favour grass pitches argument on the forum – Like many sites it needs 100pc hard standing.

We did not find the wardens rude, but they were fine. Be nice, get nice back. There are 5 and the wardens have been there many years. We had pitch 70 opposite the play ground, no issues here, no noise late night, all good.  Pitch 93 as below seems fine and no worse than the others, some pitches are not flat, but nor are they at 45degrees! Dog walk is marked as a dog walk not a play area, common sense warn your kids of possible dog mess, else tell them to keep clear.

Nothing wrong with this site, seems just some who visit.

The pub in the next static van/cabin site is an OK bolthole, Fresh Water Inn an odd place but not unreasonable,

Tenby expensive for Fish and Chips, great boat trips, the Merchants House worth a view, so to the museum, loads of Castles, Carew and Tide Mill fab, can go crabbing there, Pembrooke great too, Manorbier also worth a visit.

All good in the rain as lots to see inside. The Old Arms Hotel does good soup, as the Café in Pembrooke Castle is small and fills up. But with most places you can come and go all day in/out if you ask so pop into town to avoid the queues.

Freshwater beach is not 100pc sandy, but why go anywhere else, it has a stream, rock pools, sand and stones. Fab, my two loved it, better than just sand. The fact the site IS being revamped, a new top block, a renewed interior lower block and more hard standings only make us want to return one day. Tents wise could see anything to moan about.

Wet Wales

Very nice site access to the beach in five minutes .Negatives are Children's play area not in view of the wardens. When we arrived we had no choice but to pitch on a grass pitch right next to the play area.it was frightening to see the kids they had no interest in the facilities they were more interested in walking along the top of the boundary fence whilst other children shook the fence so hard it was like a wave with the other kids walking on the top.We did manage to move onto a hard standing on the third day near to the reception .It is in desperate need of more hard standings as people could not get on or off the grass pitches when wet.

Wonderful holiday

We stayed for just over 2 weeks as it was our first long holiday caravaning and wanted to do lots of coastal walking, which was fanatastic. We had a very warm welcome and very helpful as we explained we relatively new to caravaning. They advised us where to pitch as we had no children and didn't want to be by the play area and even though it was the summer holidays it was quiet enough as I also like to see the children cycling and having fun. The beach was walkable distance and spectacular with coastal walks shooting off in both directions. We would definitely come back again. The only thing I would say is the shower/ toilet block could have been bigger, but was told they were to be renovated in the winter. Thank you for a lovely holiday.

Superb Service

I must disagree with previous review. I found the head warden there ( Ian i think) to be superb. Nothing was too much trouble. He also took the time to explain that the loos are being renovated during the winter and the site was being given a make over. During our visit, the site was spotlessly clean, well managed and in quite the best location one could wish for - Almost right on the beach. We will be back, and we also look forward to seeing the new facilities next year
