Good for families

Be warned!

A word of warning if intending to visit this site! During the day the site is perfect for families. However, that can't be said during the hours of darkness. Woke up at 03:30 by a group of yobs in the country park directly behind our caravan. Thought nothing too much of it at the time but woke up later on to find my carrera fury bike had gone (locked to caravan wheel) with the lock on the floor which had been cut through. Reported it to wardens who confirmed that at least 6 others had also been stolen during the night and a large number of masked youths had been seen in and around the site. Decided not to stay another night due to safety concerns but wasn't allowed a nights refund as the warden didn't have the authority to do that. He advised me to contact the club on monday . Discretion should have been used under the circumstances?. The biggest fear for me though was that masked youths can happily roam the site stealing bikes at will. What would have happen had my wife disturbed them had she wanted to visit the toilet block at the time doesn't bear thinking about and the site has a responsibility for the welfare and safety of its visitors. That was sadly lacking last night though and I for one will never visit Ferry Meadows ever again as I value the safety of my family above all else. Think very seriously before visiting this site!

Comment from the Club:

Thank you for your review. This sort of incident is an unusual occurrence at this site and for this to have happened at all, the Club is very sorry.  The site team is working in conjunction with the local Police team and will be putting further security in place for the upcoming Bank Holiday weekend.

Years ago Clumber park was regularly targeted by bike thieves, my son when alot younger went for the weekend with his mate and his family, had their bikes stolen!

It's an unfortunate sign of the times.

A one off incident no site owned by anyone can prevent this, however if it's a regular occurrence then signs in reception or the forwarding of information when booking in should be given. Didnt ar the time happen at Clumber, swept under the carpet it would seem, and this site must have been providing most of the cycling public in Nottingham with bikes with the number of times stuff got nicked!

Again I knock anyone for anything, but in this instance of refund, the warden has said they are not authorised and given correct information, refer up, I cant see anymore that can be done.

Im left wondering what insurance is being claimed on?

For me the most worrying factor is, as you mention, if a camper (customer) either deliberately or by accident disturbs the thieves. It seems that it is very common for thieves to carry weapons nowadays and an innocent person could easily end up being assaulted, injured, and even killed.

I share your concern but wouldn’t a staff member or even a 3rd party watchman be an innocent person?

Clumber Park has been a target for the" Manton Mafia"(Worksop)since the early 1990s and the police and site staff as well as the National Trust (who own the site)have tried to mitigate the problem since then and I know that all members with cycles were warned and advised of the problem, since the club and national trust installed the lock up some years ago it thefts have been reduced , but as some members"know better"and do not use the lockup at night cycles still go missing,

I very much doubt that there is sufficient lock up cycle storage for all the bikes on site at the present date JVB

It is a big storage, but as the site staff will advise a seperate key issued to those staying on site is ,not a good security procedure, which is what some want as they do not want to be tied to opening times ,which are till 2000 hrsyell

Bazza (OP) thank you for the timely warning.  It is beyond me as to why the FD is defending the lax policies and attitude of their beloved “club”.  I’m sorry that you had your bike stolen and I do hope that you can claim the entire value from your insurance company, but I doubt it.  You may also find your premium will increase next year and that other insurance premiums may be affected as the insurance industry shares information.

CC Ltd has a duty of care to ensure no harm comes to any of its customers, its staff, and to their respective property.  Sticking up warning notices helps but does not properly nor fully discharges that duty.  If there is a problem they should being doing more, perhaps employing night time security and certainly providing secure storage for items that cannot be safely protected by the owner when their van is in use.

Typical response from one who will find any way possible to criticise, anything cc ,and as normal completely out of context to the incident, undecided
