Lovely location.

What a lovely place! The pitches are spacious and with plenty of space in between. We chose one in a secluded alcove with about 5 pitches surrounded by trees. It was so tranquil and there are some wonderful dog walks through the woods. For a nice afternoon out, Carlisle Castle is excellent value for money & there is lots to see. Venturing a little further, Silloth was a charming and very traditional little resort. We will definitely return here, we had a great time!

Love this site.

Second visit to this site in less than 12 months and being only 90 minutes drive from home, it's definitely one we will do again and again. This season we discovered a new paddock for dogs which was well used by us as it gave our Boxer a safe environment to let off steam and during our visit, we used it every day. We use the bathroom in the van because it isn't ornamental so the site having no facilities poses no problems for us. The only sticking point really for me was the reception / shop had restricted opening hours and we did wonder why?

One Not To Be Missed

Just spent 10 nights at this site. For us it was a 195 mile trek north but worth every mile we travelled. Both sets of wardens, stand-in and full time were extremely pleasant and helpful. The site is the most tranquil we have stayed at on the system so far. It is miles from the M6 motorway and any main roads. It is immaculately maintained despite the fact that there are very large areas of grass to be mown. It is well positioned to take advantage of all that Cumbria has to offer, both coastal and inland. We had little difficulty filling our days during our stay. There are no toilet and shower facilities, but in a way, that adds to the charm of the site. Most of the visitors were, or appeared to be retired. There are no playground facilities for children. Depending on where you live, if you miss this site, you`ll miss a gem. We certainly felt it was worth the `beat` up the M6. We did decide to leave a day early. Being frequent travellers along this motorway we know its congested times, and Sunday would have been one of them. We therefore opted to return home on Saturday afternoon which was a good call because the traffic,in the main, was light. Just a tip for anyone travelling along the M5 or M6 (though this may not ALWAYS happen), do it late ish on Saturday afternoon.....not so much on the roads.....think about it.....those who are going away will have reached their destination, and those going home will also be there. Don`t tell everyone!!

One last thing, the advice from the club is to not exceed 35 mph on the approach to the site. Ignore it at your peril. That`s not to say that the road is poor; it is undulating and there are a number of `blind summits` so be careful. In one place in particular, you`ll find this out for yourself, there is a short but severe dip in the road around which are numerous grounding scars. Take it easy and it`s no bother. Don`t let the approach put you off. What a site!

Just Booked On

Phoned up to book on and delighted with help and efficiency I received. Always like going to Englethwaite and this response typifies why.

Brief stop over

This site is ideally located in a rural, beautiful area, being very well maintained and laid out. It's a great shame there is no toilet/shower facility. It seemed strange that wardens hours on duty was up to 1.30pm and 5.00pm to 6.00pm

Peaceful

We are just back from spending the bank holiday weekend at this site. I was a bit hesitant in booking a bank holiday away as we like to go when places are quiet, but thought we would try here, well lets just say that this site is now in my top three. even though the site was full, it was so peaceful and quiet.  Yes, due to the trees there are shaded areas around the site, but I would say that most of the pitches got some sun at some point.  The reason we liked this site so much is because of the walks in the area, but especially the dog walks and dog paddock. There are lovely walks through the woods and round the ponds I think if you have children that like exploring and the outdoors this site would be great. We shall definitely be going back for either long weekend or as a stop over point.

Needs a little work

Having again used this site as a stopover to & from Scotland it is an excellent site that needs more publicity! Having also stayed here for a week it has good walking opportunities, great dog facilities with the new 2016 enclosed dog run ideal to let the dogs off steam & off lead. Carlisle is so close as is the M6 though the feed road is a little bumpy!! Yes it has no toilet block nor wifi but it ticks all the other boxes. Major down side is the lack of wardens! To get help from the wardens (which will greatly improve your stay) you have to arrive before 13:30 or between 5 & 6. This is NOT GOOD ENOUGH from the caravan club. I cannot see why arrivals here are so badly treated as being forced to find their own pitch & then return to reception to pay!! It would be very easy to stay free!!

Too much shade for us

Englethwaite is a well cared for no facilities site. We perhaps didn't have the best experience as when we arrived all the sunnier pitches were either occupied, seasonal pitches or serviced pitches. The site has an abundance of trees so we found the sun, and views elusive. TV signal was also poor for us with as we have no directional aerial. The motorhome point is not good, taking on water required blocking the enterance to the pitches and we didn't use the MH waste as it was on the wrong side for us and would have required reversing up to it. Doubtless the CC will eventually refurbish all MH points and make them easier to use. Not much for us to attract us back I'm afraid.

Peaceful

Stayed just the one night on our way to Scotland. Really loved it and would have stayed longer. It’s very quiet and peaceful, well looked after and the sort of simple site we like. The only downer is that lengthy run down the rather bumpy road from Cumwinton. We’ll probably stay over again next time were heading North.

Pure Bliss

What a lovely tranquil site.  It didn't matter a jot that it had no toilet block, everything else made up for it.  As a keen bird watcher, we saw greater spotted woodpeckers and nut hatches along with all the other common garden birds.  We enjoyed it there so much that we stayed an extra night.  A must visit is the Border Garden Centre.  Fantastic food shop as well as crafts and restaurant.  Another gem is the Lanercost Tea Rooms.  Will definitely visit again.
