The River Wear Circular Walk

Another lovely stay at one of my favourite Camp sites. This time I explored the River Wear Walk to Durham . Campers . Dont Just sit in your caravans. Get your walking shoes on because on your doorstep is a most STUNNING walk right next to the site with no busy roads to cross. Its an OK walk for dogs too ( on a lead if you go over the Style down the cornfield for 400 yards.) Once you cross the field the paths along the river are well trodden and currently no mud at all. ( July 2022 ) Head for the Sites Information room and pick up a handy map and off you go . The first 200 yards is not attractive bit of industrial estate but once you turn Right onto the Public Right Of Way, the path is well used not muddy and easy underfoot and after 10 minutes you come to a STYLE . Here you can either continue on towards quickest Route walking to Durham or Cross the Style head down the hill towards the River Wear valley . If you do continue without crossing the style after another 15 minutes you come to a small car park . For Durham via tarmac paths all the way into the city turn left at the small car park and cross the A690 bridge Or turn Right and head down to the most stunning area of outstanding natural riverside landscape . Now you will come to in a natural wood with 100 of years of history ( they could film Robin Hood hear) you will eventually come to the River wear surrounded by shear majestic cliffs and natural woods with several paths . If you want to make a circular walk from the small car park head down to the river and with the river on your left keep walking until you see a second small bridge with four large slabs down and up and immediately 10 yards past the bridge turn right and head up the path and you will have a bit of a climb up to the cornfield and then back to the Camp Site via the Style. This would make a mile and a half Circular Walk The wardens are excellent and keep the site immaculate. Quality Toilets too . Great Job. DO NOT BE PUT OFF by a few who make a big deal about some background road noise from the A1 M its not that bad in fact I stayed at Hawes Site two night before and the noise from the trees swaying in the wind was far more noticeable. . The noise from the A1 is not as noisy as the trees .......You can Find lots to do from Durham Grange .1. Durhams World Heritage Cathedral... absolutely a must see .2. Sunderland Blue Flag Sea Front (25 minutes) another must see . 3. The Angel of the North 15 minutes up the A1 . 4. The World Famous Beamish Open Air Museum 20 minutes away. But what ever you do don,t miss this walk ! Happy camping and thank you wardens .
