Excellent 6 days in Durham

Just returned from a 6 day stay at Durham Grange and we were very impressed with the site and the staff. Plenty to do in the surrounding area to keep us fully occupied although a lot of visitors seem to stay only 1 or 2 days in transit elsewhere. Site was full most days so advance booking essential. The highlights of our stay were visits to the Oriental Museum at the university (exceptional value), the cathedral (but found the no photograph rule irritating and unnecessary), Cragside NT and the national railway museum near Bishop Auckland. Not impressed with the Durham heritage coast but it did lead us towards Hartlepool and an historic picture of my wife with her arm around the Andy Capp statue. Whilst I would endorse other reviewers comments re difficulty crossing the A690 to get to the no.20 bus stops in Carrville to the city centre, there was of course the option of driving the quarter of mile to the Belmont P&R where you could park FOC and pay £2 return. Unfortunately P&R stops at 7pm so no good for evenings out.
