I would not wish to detract from the rave reviews that have gone before. Dunnet Bay site is in a fabulous location with stunning sea views. It has great wardens, really helpful, kind and efficient, so a well deserved 5 stars to them. But the site’s location on the 500 brings a number of questions for the club. Our visit was a late September weekend with inevitable weather issues which I accept may condition this review. First, during our stay we found that a substantial number of visitors stayed for one night only, departing early to continue apace on the 500, resulting in a transit site than a touring location. Be ready for late arrivals and early departures. Perhaps this is something that should be reflected in pitch allocation? Second, linking to the first issue, the site access roads are rough stoned rather than tarmac, and the pitches are exclusively grass. Whilst pleasing to the eye, it presents an issue for a high turnover of visitors, with front row pitches cordoned off. Third, the site is not screened from the A836 which runs its length, presenting traffic noise and at times a bleak aspect. Fourth, the facilities, whilst superbly maintained by the wardens, are small for a site of this size and nature. Add to this that wifi does not extend from the tiny laundry room. All of these criticisms could be cured by investment Do they outweigh the value of a visit? Certainly not.
