Beautiful site but noisy
My other half had been raving about this site for the last 3 years having paid a visit on her way home from the coast. Easy directions but also easy to miss the club signs which are set back from the road.
We arrived in the middle of the Queens celebrations, a well attended party was going on but the wardens took time to sort us out and off we went to find a spot. The site was quite full but we managed to find a site, set up and wondered where all the deer were. Went back to the wardens to confirm what pitch and we were told they were probably hiding as they had just given birth to their young. We did spot a few over the next few days.
This was a Sunday. I didn't realise just how close the London to Weymouth railway line was until the first of the trains sounded its horn approaching the crossing just outside the site at 6.20 am, and they continued to sound the horns every twenty minutes either going to Weymouth or to London. No mention of this in the book. Some of the other visitors said that 'you will get use to it' but 6 times an hour, starting so early and ending well after 11pm, err no! we didn't!
On Monday morning we were serenaded by the lorries in the quarry (which is on the opposite side of the site) with their reversing tones accompanied by various bangs and thumps as minerals were extracted and loaded onto trucks. 8am start!
After saying this we did have a nice time at the site. Tank museum, (really awful coffee) £18.00 a head was a nice day out, Yeovilton Fleet Air Arm Museum again £18.00 was another interesting half day, but disappoining cafe, and some of the exhibits were still under construction. The wardens as ever are great with good local knowledge. The pub by the railway crossing serves some excellent food and the beer is good.
Shame about the noise.
