underwhelmed after reading excellent reviews

I booked this site as the reviews seemed great. Despite the staff being lovely and the site clean & well kept, I just didn’t like it here, though reading the reviews I must be in the minority! I have no particular complaints but the fact that it’s wooded was not a plus for me, it felt like being in a cave on our pitch, we had lights on all day. It’s a similar site to Coniston Park Coppice or Borrowdale in the Lakes, being in the woods. However it’s slightly different at Crossways because many of the trees are on mounds so unless your in one of the small glades it does feel very dark as it’s not just the height of the trees, you’ve got several more metres of earth or rock. My kids aged 4 & 8 were very bored, and because it’s such a large site with lots of lanes they couldn’t have the freedom they normally have. There’s no playground. Dry composting toilets were ok, it’s a normal toilet apart from the several foot tunnel for everything to go down. Only specific complaint is the train station down the road-from 6am I could hear the beeps from the rail crossing barriers coming down and it was quite frequent. Good location for days out though and shops and pub. Did see deers and that was cool for the children to see.
