Beware the dreaded gravel

Take note of the pictures shown here, which on close inspection will show how this site has been treated to a dramatic overuse of gravel and hard core, creating vast areas of grey hard standing akin to car parks. Hardly attractive or conducive to sitting out. The site is very shaded and quite dark too (unlike, for instance, the Carsington Water site in the Peak District, another coppice site, way better designed). Shame really because the site is well-placed for Coniston town itself, the lake, and lovely places like Ambleside, Windermere, and Grasmere, too. Good dog walks abound, although none are dedicated. The facilities are spotlessly clean too. When you arrive you'll be asked to drive around this vast site to find a pitch, something that we found quite a challenge, after a seven hour tow (which culminates in some really tricky access roads). My advice would be park up and walk around (doubtless noting the untidily coppiced area, fenced off). For such a large site, this site is quiet. But not for us, I'm afraid.
