A Cut Above
We have visited Coniton twice now. Once at the start of the season (first Bank Holiday) and again towards the end of the main season in Sept (although site is open all year). Great for families. Intimate layout in clusters but site is huge & usually has capacity. You can walk down to Lake Coniston and also into Coniston village. We took a dinghy, which can be launched by driving to the lakeside. Just ask wardens for the padlock code. Off road & easy going family cycling can be had from the site, some of which is lakeside. Shops and restaurants in nearby village are good. Fish and chip van was on site on Friday. Kids really enjoy the lakes wildlife park which is not too far off by car. Toilet blocks are modern and clean. Only the last section of road becomes narrow but most drivers seem well aware that caravans and motor homes are frequent users. Probably best not to try to get there early as you are more likely to meet someone leaving! Final note of caution is not to drive right to the 'end' of the site past the toilet block and down the hill as the road becomes unmade and you may not get round the turning sweep if someone is parked there! I had to reverse up the hill with a twin axle caravan! Wardens were very efficient. They let me through at 8.00pm on the Friday of a Bank Holiday weekend & were still doing so at 9.00pm! Following morning had another 5 LNAs outside. It WILL take you longer than you think to get there but definitely worth it.
