Great views

If you can arrive fairly early try to get pitch 56.The view across the racecourse to Cleeve Hill is brilliant, especially when the weather is as good as it was when we were there for 3 midweek nights last week.We only came here at short notice,we couldn't get the dates we wanted elsewhere, but I'm glad we came. The park n ride buses are very close by if you are not inclined to walk into Cheltenham (20mins).From there it is just a 40 minute ride on the bus to Gloucester for the historic docks and the lovely cathedral,so there is plenty to do.If you can make it I recommend a walk round the racecourse perimeter (about 3 miles I reckon)nice and peaceful. You could even break your walk and have a drink and a bite to eat in The Plough, beer poured from the barrel, don't see that too often, and the homemade burger and blue cheese sauce etc etc, well,I wouldn't giving that another go !! The facilities on site are maybe a little dated and the staff,we think,do a fantastic job with what they've got,and with a smile too.Thankyou

clean and convenient

Glad we arrived early on the Friday before Bank Holiday as by the afternoon the place was packed. Preferred the grass to the hardstanding as felt it was a bit like pitching on Tesco carpark otherwise. Grass pitches have the best views, we managed a great spot overlooking the racecourse and the very helpful wardens suggested we park nose in to get the best view - how nice was that! As usual facilities impeccable. Very convenient for the park and ride. There was building noise from the new stand and also a fun fair that was over the other side of the course but as it wasn't red hot sunshine we didn't do too much sitting outside so it didn't disturb us too much. There is no grassy areas for children to kick a ball or play and no playground but there were still quite a few children about on the site. All in all a good place but you do need to choose your pitch carefully as views are very restricted otherwise.

Charming Cheltenham

We have just returned from this lovely site after spending the bank holiday (May) here for 2 nights. We'd read about the need for levelling blocks as the site slopes from all sides but found that we did not need them. True our 27ft unit wasn't perfectly level but neither was it uncomfortable or troublesome. The true beauty of this site is no matter what the weather you're not dragging loads of dirt into your motorhome or caravan when parked on the tarmac. This proved really useful as it persisted down all night , each night and was beautiful during the day drying out the tarmac very quickly. The walk into the charming town of Cheltenham took about 15 / 20 mins pushing my wife in her wheelchair, downhill going uphill coming back but nothing to put you off. The park and ride is virtually onsite just the other side of the boundary fence if you need it, we preferred the lovely walk through the park. We'd read that the toilet blocks were a bit old and iffy but they were far from it proving to be clean, warm and serviceable. The true crowning glory of this site is however the lovely wardens, very welcoming and accommodating. The lady helped to pitch us advising the best one level and watched whilst we reversed back to the main building. We tried 2 or 3 pitches till we were satisfied and she was very helpful. We've never come across "bad" wardens but these were particularly nice. we shall return.

Useful, but noisy

Currently 10pm.  The racecourse is hosting The Black Light Run.  Loud 'music' has been playing since 6pm. I do hope we can get to bed soon. The sight is very convenient for Cheltenham and absolutely perfect for watching the races.  Largely tarmac and with a pronounced slope.. We thingk it would be best as a night halt or for a 2 or 3 night stay to visit Cheltenham or the races or both. We so wish we had known about this fun run as it certainly is not fun for us!

Worth a visit

Have just stopped overnight before, but decided to stay for two nights and visit Cheltenham and pleased we did. Being on a race course makes for an interesting site. We have done the circular walk around the racecourse before, but this time decided to combine two of the local walks helpfully outlined on the noticeboard and we walked part way down the perimeter path and across the field into Prestbury village and had a beer at the Royal Oak. Had to stay outside because of the dogs but it was under cover. Returned via the main road route; the one down the footpath is a pleasanter - and quieter - route. On Tuesday we walked into Cheltenham, again following the instructions helpfully provided by the wardens. Very pleasant park with a little cafe at the southernmost end selling a decent coffee and bacon roll - water for the dogs too - and all in the sunshine fortunately. Visited the Holst Birthplace Museum which is well worth a visit and they provided a stool for one of us to sit on in the front garden while we took it in turns to go round. Lunch at Harry Cook's which is one of the few places (Tourist Info could only identify three and we sampled two) that will allow dogs inside and is very pleasant on Montpelier Walk opposite Montpelier Gardens - decent beer and bar snacks though not  cheap. Then the dogs and I sat on a window seat at the Boston Tea Party - and I had a tea - while my other half had a look round the Wilson - the museum and art gallery (free) and well worth a visit I am told.  Bus back from just up the road - £1 each for the dogs. Despite a number of small parks and some friendly dogs and owners, Cheltenham is not the most dog friendly place, but there are one or two places you can go inside with them and they can go on the bus, so if you are  a dog owner it is still possible to have a very pleasant day there.

Saved our bacon

My wife and I were due to stay at Tewkesbury Abbey 29th and 30th March but we were informed on 28th that the site was very waterlogged. We drove to Cheltenham Racecourse and there were pitches available so stayed there instead. The view from our motorhome was picturesque looking at the Cleve Hills over the racecourse. The facilities were adequate and it was a comfortable walk into the town where we did some shopping. The town is very pleasant and we were glad to stay at the site. The bus stop is also very convenient. All the pitches are on concrete surrounding one of the main course buildings.

Two nights at Cheltenham

Just returned after Friday and Saturday at Cheltenham. Only hard standing in use but it was wet anyway. Strange being surrounded by the stands. Wardens very helpful. Quiet, facilities. It's quite a way to walk to the town or to the nearest pub. Park and ride £1.70 each plus £1 for the dog each way . Good break with a difference. Cheltenham is looking a bit run down.
