Wonderful Walking

2 years since our last visit to Castleton we have returned and thoroughly enjoyed our week. ( 15th -22nd October). The wardens were very good and low profile but working hard in the background. The key to a Peak District holiday is to enjoy the walking and there's so much on the doorstep. Winnats Pass is a good starter and then you can graduate onto Mam Tor- starting at Castleton rather than cheating & driving to the car park near the summit. Once you've done these we can thoroughly recommend Tilly's tearoom (next to the Nags Head pub) for good homemade food at very reasonable prices in really nice surroundings- and they don't bat an eyelid at wet, bedraggled walkers with muddy boots coming into their tastefully decorated premises. The only downside of the site is the main road into Castleton which can be heard from any point on the site, the entrance to which unfortunately is on the exit from Castleton just as the road straightens out so seems to be a point where people put their foot down, creating a bit more traffic noise than some would like. That said, we will definitely be returning, if only for Mam Tor & Tilly's Steak, Ale & Mushroom pie which is to die for!
