Nice stay at Castleton
My wife and I have just returned after a very pleasant 10 night stay at Castleton. We have stayed on this site several times, the attraction being it's location in the Hope Valley only about 10 minutes walk along a pavement into lovely Castleton with it's good choice of pubs & restaurants. There are a number of walks directly from the site, eg Mam Tor, Losehill, Win Hill, Edale; and there are very many more only a short car journey away. The facilities on-site, (toilets, showers, dish-washing) are of a good standard, although there is currently a restriction on the number of people allowed entry at any one time. This is controlled using the "rubber band" system, which is simple enough, and works quite well most of the time, but is let down when some Members fail to use their rubber band or fail to collect their band when leaving the facility. There was a short queue to get into the men's facility during the morning busy time, but not at other times. The site was quite full, and Castleton Village, and the Mam Tor walks were very busy, so no chance for any solitude in these hills! Other surrounding hills also seemed to be popular and busy. There is significant traffic noise during the day; the road seems to attract noisy speeding cars and motorcycles; but overnight the site was nice and quiet.
It is a very popular site with weekends booked up months ahead, but we hope to return next year.
