Friends were holding a wedding nearby. Having been at Castleton last October decided to spend 3 nights here to make the most of the site, walking and pubs nearby. Stayed here for 3 nights at half the cost of the hotel if we had stayed at the wedding. As always, met with a smile and friendly greeting and the site site and facilities spotless as always. We love it here and will be back very soon.
A lovely site nestled away in a small wooded area just a 10 minute walk away from the village. Arrived on a busy Friday, which was not a problem for the wardens. All was under control with a very friendly and quick entry. Some of the pitches are a little close to each other but others providing ample room. Site is very clean & tidy as well is the toilet block. Site was full at the weekend which is great to see people getting out in their vans. Castleton at the weekend is busy busy busy however come week days a much more relaxed atmosphere. Cracking pubs in the town, Ye Old Cheshire Cheese pub is a must for a stop, superb pies and huge choice of local ales. A great week and one to return to again.
We chose to come to Castleton for just one night to break up our journey home and to simply relax.
The site is set in a glorious area of outstanding natural beauty and is within walking distance of a lovely village, with several pubs and eateries, just along the main road with a pavement all the way.
Trish welcomed us upon arrival and showed us on the site planner, where we would best be suited to park up, due to having a larger Motorhome. Trish then suggested we take a tour around the site & choose the most suitable pitch for our personal needs. When she learned that we were not planning to actually do anything physical due to my husbands need to rest, Trish then offered to visit our MH with the site keys etc, once we had chosen where to site. This was above and beyond the service offered and very kind of her, especially as it was a very cold and wet January day. Trish was super friendly, informative and kind. A credit to your club and we would certainly recommend visiting Castleton again.
The services were clean and within easy access of the site. The bins well labelled and our pitch was fairly level, though we did raise one front wheel to make it absolutely level.
A WORD OF WARNING WHEN LEAVING FOR HOME - ESPECIALLY LARGER MOTORHOMES!!
Our sat nav is for HGV's and set up with all our dimensions etc. Sadly, this did not prevent it routing us RIGHT from the site entrance & to a totally unsuitable road, heading up Winnats Pass between the peaks. The road was very steep and half way up, we realised that due to the heavy rain falling, the undulation of surface & the lack of grip on the road surface, it wasn't sufficient for our twin axle Motorhome to maintain its momentum. We were therefore forced to reverse all the way back down to the Speedwell Cavern and use their car park entrance. This was a tad hairy to say the least. I got drenched managing the traffic flow around our stranded vehicle as we eased it backwards slowly around the bends. The locals were really understanding and offered their support but we managed without incident luckily. It was unusually busy that day - apparently- approximately 100 vehicles were directed during the whole process but we were just glad to get back safely and head out the village towards the Lady Bower Reservoir and home along the Snake Pass.
Castleton is truly inviting and we will definitely be back but we wont ever turn right out of the CC SIte in our MH again.
we arrived on the 23/12 and stayed for 5 nights for christmas
the warden did an express check in as it was raining so we could set up and check in properly later
site was one of the best of the network
excellent toilet block also has a good size drying room a games room with a table tenis table and a pool table
castleton was only a 10 min walk as is hope in other direction
castleton has an aray of pubs cafes and quaint little shops to visit and loads of caverns to visit inc the famous blue john
great for walks mam tor has some fabulous views
and the pubs were very christmasy with lovley chistmas trees lining the main street
had a fabulous time
only gripe was when stayed at other club sites for christmas the wardens sent you a little invite to reception on christmas eve for a little get together for a festive drink and a bit to eat a little buffet ect
but nothing on this occasion wardens need to get into the christmas spirit a little
but overall due to location a nice christmas getaway
Our short break at this site started with the warmest of welcomes on Christmas Eve. The wardens couldn't have been more helpful. The site itself is very well kept and only a short walk from Castleton, where there are a number of good pubs and coffee shops. We have already booked to go again in the summer.
Castleton is a great site in a fantastic location. Walking distance to Castleton, which has a great choice of pubs and cafes. Wardens were very friendly and helpful especially with the arrival process. I personally wish more of the sites on the Club Network were like this in terms of Serviced pitches and location.
Well it is certainly a great site, no doubt about that, wardens when we were there were very friendly which sadly is not always the case nowadays, but we were on site mid September and the temperature was down to around 6* in the evening, the shower blocks were the same, no heating and the water although hot came as a dribble, the flow rate was quite honestly pathetic, this linked to no heating was not what one expects after a days hiking.
