Great Base for Off-Site Activities

Like many others we really struggled to get a white peg pitch at this site for any period that straddled a weekend. Encouraged by the sympathetic wardens, we kept ringing the site and we were lucky enough to benefit from a cancellation which allowed us a 10-day stay, in our caravan, in mid-June. Being a popular, site you are likely to have little choice between pitches. All are hard-standing, usually with a narrow strip of grass between neighbours and the site is pretty much surrounded by trees, providing shade whether you want it or not. The facilities block is new and in good condition, providing the standard Club fare, including showers with continuous running hot water (fantastic) and the obligatory attack of the cold, wet curtain (yuk!). The drying room was an absolute Godsend and the family/games room a welcome extra. As ever, the site and all facilities were maintained to a very high standard by the friendly wardens. The location is ideal for walking (and similar pursuits) with numerous trails emanating from Castleton which are well-documented on the internet. We were glad we printed a selection of routes, of varying ‘difficulty’ (we are back to 'easy' to 'moderate'), before leaving home because we were surprised that the on-site information room offered little in this respect. On our ‘break’ days, we enjoyed visits to various NT properties, including the excellent Quarry Bank Mill and Styal Estate (expensive for non-members); the town of Buxton; and the nearby village of Eyam (interesting history relating to the plague with fascinating low-cost museum). Castleton CMCS has a lot to offer as a base for off-site activities and our only disappointment was that the pitches were not really conducive to outdoor relaxation. Operating at or near capacity, sitting out, bbq, etc, had to take place on stone chippings within a few feet of neighbours and the site road, despite the alleged increase in pitch spacing. We summarised it as a ‘functional’ site, ideally located for, and designed to support, off-site activities. Its popularity reflects how well it delivers in this respect but there are probably ‘prettier’ sites in the Peak District. We would return (if we could get in) for a shorter, wholly activity-focussed stay.

Excellent first stay

Have just stayed 4 nights in our campervan. Wardens greeted us warmly and gave helpful advice about local walks and the nearby town. It is a real bonus to find a site that is in easy walking distance of town and fantastic countryside. Particularly want to commend the wardens for keeping the facilities so clean even during a week of inclement weather.

A good stay for us

We stayed for 3 nights for our first visit here (full afterwards so could not extend) and enjoyed our stay. Castleton has lots of good eateries and the bakery/general store/ice cream parlour is great - especially their pasties and rolls. We had some nice walks, with plenty of choice from the site. We didn't have our dog on this occasion but will bring him next time. I'm sure he'd enjoy the countryside as much as we did, even if has to squeeze through some of the stiles! We had a difficult journey to the site (from the east) as the directions warned about taking the caravan through Winatts Pass and detoured around until we found the road mentioned in the site directions, only to learn later that the Pass is actually west of the site and that we wouldn't have had to navigate it in any case. Ah well, lesson learned for next time. We would recommend this site: it's well located and well run, neat and tidy and up to the usual Club standards. We didn't notice any real issues with road noise as mentioned by some reviewers and we were on a serviced pitch near the entrance. Perhaps the traffic was just light during our stay. Might be worth including directions to the site from east of the M1 though.

Mighty Castleton

Just got back from Castleton Club site, once again great stay staff outstanding. Don’t know which site other reviewers stayed on but every time we have stayed no problems at all. There is caves to go down cafes to go in together with lots of pubs, we went in the castle hotel, you won’t need a pudding. Good bus service and trains from Bamford to Sheffield or Manchester. Loads of walks from site staff have a book with local walks.

Don't arrive early or let your dog wee on the gras

One morning my wife walking from the van with our little dog towards the dog walk. She got as far as the grassed area opposite the office when our dog crouched down and had a wee. The Assistant Warden was parked close by on his tractor. He said “we do have a dog walk” My wife replied “yes she was aware and that was where she was going”. He then said abruptly in front of some other members. “Well we have to cut the grass when you have finished with it”. He got off the tractor turned his back walked off and went across to the office to join his wife. The other members were like me shocked and disgusted as my wife was with the attitude of an employee of the Club. My wife returned to our van very upset there was simply no need to be spoken to at all like that. Dogs see grass and will wee on it. Even if our dog had a poo we like all dog owners carry bags and any mess would have been cleaned up. On the same morning we overheard the same Assistant Warden speak to a chap who had arrived at the barrier to book onto the site shortly after 11am. He said again abruptly and loud to the chap “I am much too busy (he was over at the toilet block cleaning) and if I was not busy I would have turned you away”. Yes I know you cannot book in until noon on each day but again it was the manner in which he spoke and dealt with the member. My wife and I in our working lives were both involved very closely with the general public in sensitive situations but always treated people in a respectful and understanding manner. No member (or non member) of the Club should have to tolerate being spoken to or dealt with in this way by an employee of the Club. It is simply not acceptable or can be excused. Also if you don't park correctly on the peg he will be round to tell you off. So you have been warned...

Well located but pitches a bit tight and road noise

We love Castleton and this site is very well situated. It’s a safe flat walk to the village. There can be quite a lot of road noise and if the site is full it does feel a bit tight and congested on the pitches and wash room area. The warden is a bit rude on arrival eg we were 5 mins late and kept saying in quite a stern voice “stay in your vehicle we aren’t ready yet” even tho I was just sitting on a wall and was happy to wait. I heard him say this to many others when they arrived which isn’t a very nice welcome. The lady in the office must have said she was ready and to let people in because I heard him say “well don’t bust a gut”!!!!! We might return but it wasn’t our favourite site in Derbyshire.

Scenic Castleton

This is a well maintained site with friendly and helpful wardens. Shower block is kept very clean. The dog walk on site is not for exercising but mainly for toiletting as it is very small. There is some road noise so parking at top of site recommended. Castleton is only a short walk away along a busy road where there are a few cafes, shops and pubs. The bakers is highly recommended as is the cream tea at The Rambler’s Rest, which is also dog friendly. There is a scenic walk to Hope through fields and partly by the river. Dogs have to be kept on leads some of the way as there are sheep inhabited fields to cross. Some stiles to negotiate too. Our dogs are used to being off lead and we found that this was not possible most of the time. All in all, a lovely site in a very picturesque part of the country,

Couple nights here.

Decided to stay here as needed to go to Sheffield hospital.good choice of pitch ,not fussed for only 2 nights, main thing to be level.Had to pay to park in village not able to walk far.Nice tea and teacake at 3 roof café. Motorhome filling point might be tight for large vans. Toilet block ok but as usual very heavy doors, not easy with a walking stick. Water hot and bars to hold onto. Bus on time going and coming back. If you need to go to Royal Hallamshire Hospital bus stops right outside. Surprised to see empty pitches Thursday night as web said full,Late cancellations I assume? all in all good site.

Lovely site with helpful wardens

Recently stayed at this site. Cannot speak highly enough of the kindness of Carol and Ian the wardens. We had an horrendous journey taking 6 hours to arrive at site and only one pitch left which we had to have. As we were staying a week the wardens made sure we could move to a more suitable pitch next morning. Appreciate their help. Spotlessly clean site, lovely facilities. Lots of places to visit nearby. Dog walks small, please get rid of stinging nettles as not very comfortable for the dog!

Ditch the Car

First stay here at the end of April. Reception and facilities up to the usual high standard. Pitches are a good size and well laid out so that they do not look too regimented. There are a small number backing onto the road which were subject to noise but this is such a popular site (especially at weekends) that you might not get much of a choice. You could easily ditch the car for a week with plenty of walking and easy access to Castleton and Hope where you will find everything you would need in terms of shops and pubs. Found O2 mobile signal was good as was TV reception over our omni directional roof aerial however Wifi was absolute rubbish when it was up. We were even advised to call AirAngel (the service provider) ourselves and then rather amusingly got several phone calls from them asking us to go and reset the wifi boxes. The two on site dog walks were adequate for our dog but as usual sad to say we witnessed a number of dogs relieving themselves on pitches and being walked around on extending leads going where they wanted. This is a great site and are already booked in for later in the year to continue our exploration of the Peaks.
