Good for families

Calm oasis amongst the hustle and bustle

We have used this site several times and are never disappointed. We live fairly locally so often come here for a few days to unwind and relax. The area is great for both couples and families, the facilities offered by the adjacent country park seem to cater for most tastes and offers many activities from canoeing to abseiling to archery and orienteering. There are loads of walks from the site and the heritage railway passes right past the site giving an elevated view of the steam (and diesel) trains as they pass by. There is even an organised weekend “fun-run” (if you like that sort of thing!) on a Sunday morning. The walk along the river to Ramsbottom is well worth considering as Rammy (as it is called locally) offers a good selection of refreshment options (our favourite is the Chocolate Café, where you can sample delightful homemade chocolate in a vast variety of flavours) and nice shops. The walk takes a couple of hours and there is a bus back option if you only want to walk one way (Rosso bus number 477/478). The walk into Bury town centre takes about half an hour at a holidaymakers pace but there is the option to catch a bus which stops about 500 yards from the site entrance. Bury market attracts visitors from far and wide and is a must see if you have never been before. The Metrolink (tram) system gets you into Manchester City centre from Bury in less than half an hour. The wardens were very welcoming and friendly, the shop stocks a few essential items and newspapers are available to order at weekends. The adjacent pub serves nice food and drink and has a large enclosed beer garden with play equipment for children to keep them entertained whilst the adults put the world to rights. The site itself is mainly hard standings , most pitches are very flat and the toilet block is conveniently centrally located, the facilities are of the usual CC high standard and were very clean and warm, my only criticism would be that the shower water pressure was a bit weak for my liking (but adequate though – I just prefer a powerful shower). There are lots of great places to visit by car within a short drive of Bury and The Burrs is a good place to stay to get away from the crowds of the towns and cities. During our visit several new hardstandings were being created, we wondered how much noise there would be from the pub beer garden which backs directly onto some of them, maybe something to consider when selecting your pitch especially during the warmer months.
