All round excellence
I liked this site which was really well kept, clean and fresh and bright and open – with no sign of the claustrophobic, shut-in atmosphere of so many sites. The wardens who greeted me were new, that day, but they were friendly and welcoming, even though I was a bit late. The site is very big. Some pitches are on a slightly higher level than most. If you rely on your feet to get you around you won’t want to be pitched too far from the entrance. It’s a good walk along the road from the site entrance to the main road and then to buses (which are very frequent with opportunities to go much farther afield) and shops. As a consequence you’ll probably be wanting to keep the walk from your pitch to the entrance to a minimum. The farthest most pitches are a quarter of a mile from the entrance. That’s an observation not a criticism. It is how it is and no one expects change. The walk back, whether from the nearest bus, the shops or the marina (in total the marina is a little over a mile’s walk) is almost entirely uphill. The shower blocks were excellent and the motorhome service points very good – especially the one nearest the entrance which allows easy access. It lacks the new style drainage points but hopefully that will come soon. The pitches were excellent too. It is a shame there is no access to the downs to the east of the site from the site itself, but these can be accessed from a small park about two thirds of the way down the lane to the site. These lovely rolling hills afford really great walks and some truly beautiful views to the coast, Peacehaven and Brighton. The Whitehawk football club is immediately adjacent to the site. If there’s a match on during your stay, I imagine this could be distracting; but this is hardly a show stopper given the short time involved and the infrequent number of occasions it will occur. The fish I had from the fish and chip van was one of the best pieces of fish I have had from a chippie in years. Unfortunately, the chips did not match this high level of distinction, tasting rather like the oven variety (though they weren't). Why are "van" chips never like traditional chip-shop chips? Anyway, this is not very relevant to the fact that Brighton CC Site is most definitely a very good place to be and I much liked it and everything about it. I would highly recommend it.
