Beautiful, remote location, with hard working staff but needs serious upgrading

Stunning location for this site, surrounded by walks and countryside, but the facilities (although clean) are not up to club standards (even though the club is still charging as if it was!). The wardens work hard given the site limitations. The laundry sinks have been given over to inside pot washing, although there are washing machines. The poor wardens operate from a cupboard sized office/reception (but this doesn't seem to limit them). Lots of uneven surfaces around the main building, and the bar restaurant is accessed by an outside staircase We were allocated our pitch (on the lower part of the site) which was very deep gravel, and even with chocks we could not get the van totally level. The pitches are allocated by unit size (even though you pay the same price), due to varying pitch sizes and fire rules. The deep, small grade gravel was very unpleasant to walk on, especially in open shoes, and also not easy to drive off. Had the weather been better, it would have been awful to sit out on, so take a groundsheet just in case. The site includes a beautiful wooded riverside area, but be aware, there is Giant Hogweed growing there. The wardens were quick to respond to this, but it is pernicious (and seeds and grows fast by rivers) and extremely toxic (especially when mixed with sunlight) , so take care. Wildlife abounds, and on the whole the site is tranquil, but there are no barriers, so no restrictions on coming and going. We were treated to someone opposite us hitching up, and leaving the car engine running whilst doing so/lifting caravan legs and calling out the functioning of their lights at just past 6 am in the morning. We could only presume that as the unit only arrived the night before they were off to catch a ferry from Poole. Not impressed. The road out of Bridport to the site is very busy (although the site is well set back so you do not hear it) . You need to use at least a part of this road if you want to access any of the National Cycle Routes, or cycle paths to Bridport. We felt it wasn't a great idea, so stuck to walking. Work is ongoing at West Bay (flood defences) , and both East and West Beach were closed when we walked there. It was hard to get any definitive information about closures (even the Dorset council site was vague) , but may be worth checking before you set out if beach access is important to you.
