Wrong for us, but right for you?
For this review to make sense we need to explain that staying on this site was not part of our original holiday plans. We ended up here when our original booking at a site nearer Keswick, not C&MH Club, was cancelled at very short notice due to waterlogged ground. As we soon discovered getting a pitch in this popular holiday area at a few hours notice is extremely difficult.
The positives have been more than adequately covered by other reviewers, and we agree that the local walks from the back gate towards the lake and the village of Grange are a delight. However, we thought many of the pitches gloomy and depressing and the crushed slate hard standings are messy when wet. The site entrance is very awkward and getting out with a caravan is even worse.
However, the real No No for us was access, both along the B road from Keswick and then the more minor road from Grange village. Yes, of course we expected these to be narrow with poor visibility, but we are both experienced ‘towers’ so not a problem as such. But we were not prepared for the sheer volume of traffic including necessary heavies such as delivery vehicles and service buses, combined with large numbers of walkers who have no decent footpath to use. We felt guilty about contributing to this by choosing to tow here, bearing in mind that not everyone loves a caravan. Not great PR for our hobby.
All of the above made us feel very uncomfortable and we cut short our stay as soon as we could and moved to Troutbeck. What a delight! Further in physical distance from Keswick but nearer time-wise.
As life members we don’t enjoy being critical of our beloved Club, but hope that by leaving this review we may save others from making an unhappy mistake.
