Lovely but not perfect
Just arrived home from Borrowdale having had a nice stay. The Wardens are every bit as good as others have said but this site won't suit everybody. If you are happy to use your own facilities you'll be fine as there's no real facilities to speak of bar the usual electric, water and waste. The service points are few and far between but there is a good aerial booster.
There are no lake side pitches, so don't be misled by other comments. Some are located nearer to the gate and path to the lake. The pitches are not all generous, can be quite sloping and the crushed slate of the hardstandings carries in on shoes and dodgy paws when wet. The whole site is in quite dense woodland, so sunlight will be dappled and shade easy to find. I imagine this is a very deliberate policy of the Lake District park authorities in order to preserve the beauty of the area. The potential bonus is wildlife up close but we didn't see any.
The saving grace is the location and easy access to this wonderful area of the Lake District, in that respect it is on a par with Coniston but lacks a more open aspect and the facilities of others sites in the Lakes. We love Keswick so it worked well for us for a few days stay.
