Late summer at Borrowdale

I approached the site with some trepidation, but found - with care - it was quite straight forward from Keswick, through Grange village and to the site itself. However the actual entrance into the site is quite deceptive, with a very tight right-hand turn. You need to keep as far to the left as possible as you turn. There is a gate obstruction on the right, as you turn, that is easily caught amidships, with a long caravan. At least that was my experience. Fortunately I realised what was happening as I turned and stopped quickly. The warden then appeared and kindly guided me through. The staff are great - very friendly and helpful. We needed to use a wheel ramp as the pitch we chose was not level crosswise. As other reviewers have already said the surface is very fine grit, you need to be vigilant in leaving shoes at the awning entrance, or the grit gets everywhere. However these are minor considerations compared to the beautiful location. There is a 77 bus that can be hailed down, right at the site entrance. It is a circular route Keswick to Keswick. If you have time, take the direction towards Buttermere - going over the 1 in 4 Honister pass in a bus is truly something else! We wielded our concessionary bus passes and repeated the treat twice! We will certainly be visiting this site again. Our party comprised three senior citizens, one of whom is a fairly active 90 year old.
