Stayed 3 times this year

We live about an hour away from this site so stay a few times for 1 nt. The location is excellent with great views of Derwentwater and around. Good walks and short walk across boardwalk to hotel/pubs. No bathrooms but as that may put people off it means we can get booked on mostly whenever we want! good activities all around.

Wonderful Derwentwater.

If you love the Lakes and walking,Queitn site and Stunning views-This is a cracker. The wardens are friendly and very helpful . The site can be a bit dark and windy-I blame the trees! and phone reception can be hit and miss. Keswick is the most dog friendly place we know and you must try Ice creams from Luchinis and the superb Fish and Chips form "The Old Keswickian. The Bus rides are excellent, especially the 77/77a circular route which is a tour in itself.

Great access to Derwentwater & surrounding areas

We stayed at Borrowdale for 5 nights in early September 2016 as the base for the final part of our own 2016 National Three Peaks Challenge i.e. the ascent of Scafell Pike. As others have said, the site has no facilities [i.e. no toilets or showers] but all the hardstandings have an electric & TV point close by. The site is fairly spread out and all pitches are within the forested area so, at times, it can feel a bit dark & oppressive. We did get a mobile signal [Tesco] which supported our MiFi system, so contact with the outside world was available [some may not relish that though!]. The motorhome service point is probably the best that we have come across in recent years, although the need to lift the waste water covers is a pain – open gratings would be so much better. There is good access to the shores of the perimeter paths around Derewentwater as well as walks to Cat Bells & Castle Crag directly from the site. The village of Grange is a short distance away and had two café’s & a hotel. We did manage the Scafell Pike ascent and we were collected from site to start from Seathwaite rather than take the motorhome down the narrow lane to the start point. A tiring walk but we found the Langstrath Country Inn in Stonethwaite for much needed refreshment!

Good location

We stayed for 2 nights at Borrowdale site. The wardens were friendly and helpful. They site is just lovely, clean and tidy, in an excellent location for walking and for catching the bus to other areas to walk or site see. We loved it and will definitely go back again.??????

Late summer at Borrowdale

I approached the site with some trepidation, but found - with care - it was quite straight forward from Keswick, through Grange village and to the site itself. However the actual entrance into the site is quite deceptive, with a very tight right-hand turn. You need to keep as far to the left as possible as you turn. There is a gate obstruction on the right, as you turn, that is easily caught amidships, with a long caravan. At least that was my experience. Fortunately I realised what was happening as I turned and stopped quickly. The warden then appeared and kindly guided me through. The staff are great - very friendly and helpful. We needed to use a wheel ramp as the pitch we chose was not level crosswise. As other reviewers have already said the surface is very fine grit, you need to be vigilant in leaving shoes at the awning entrance, or the grit gets everywhere. However these are minor considerations compared to the beautiful location. There is a 77 bus that can be hailed down, right at the site entrance. It is a circular route Keswick to Keswick. If you have time, take the direction towards Buttermere - going over the 1 in 4 Honister pass in a bus is truly something else! We wielded our concessionary bus passes and repeated the treat twice! We will certainly be visiting this site again. Our party comprised three senior citizens, one of whom is a fairly active 90 year old.

Better Hardstanding

Arrived at Borrowdale for a four night stay in early September. The approach road to the site is not as bad as people make out if you are experienced and comfortable towing a caravan. The site itself is based in a wood with hardstanding . The hardstanding pitch that i was on wasnt too good as i had trouble levelling the caravan out from side to side whilst trying to also fit the wheel lock. The hardstanding was really small gravel pieces that got everywhere in the awning and caravan even when removing your shoes and this was in addition to the small seeds falling out of the trees. The location of the site is perfect for walkers but i wouldnt suggest fetching a family as there are no facilities to entertain small children. The lack of a toilet block didnt hamper my stay but maybe i think a washing up area would be good. if you want sun then maybe this site isnt for you as it is totally shielded by the canopy of the trees which can make it feel damp and wet.Overall a nice site but maybe not as good as most club sites but that was reflected in the price

Late Summer Break

Spent four nights here from Bank Holiday Monday. The site is great for walkers and great for my dogs. Access is tight through Grange and arriving on a Bank Holiday didn't help but made it safe and sound. Only used the car once whilst there. The local bus was useful and walking by the lake up to Keswick was a treat. We were sited in Squirrels Leap but unfortunately didn't see any but did come across a deer in the woodland. Such a quiet peaceful site nestled in the trees. Think we will return.

Great start to my holiday

Yes it might not be the easiest route to a site but well worth once you are sited. Wardens are very friendly and helpful and make you feel most welcome. They also have good knowledge of the local area. Walked around the lake on the first day and took up the challenge Cats Bells on day two with outstanding views. Did not find the lack of toilets a real problem just a few more trips to waste point. This site might not suit everyone but if you like walking, wildlife and peace and quite then give it a try.

Superb, peaceful, out of the bustle location

Don't let the narrow route into the site put you off. A later arrival time and early departure easily overcomes! A very peaceful, wooded site in a quiet location next to the lake ( but no lake views). Two minutes walk through a side gate and you are on the lake side and onto the circular Derwent Water footpath. Grange is a lovely small village with two very good cafes. A site that no facilities or playground enhances rather than detracts. 5 stars all round!
