Good for families

Enjoyed our stay but......

Enjoyed our weeks stay at Bolton Abbey apart from a few niggles. We have just stayed at Bolton Abbey which must have been the last full week before it closes and we ran out of Propane gas and the site had no bottles due to its impending closure which was very inconvenient as we were unable to get any anywhere in the area, why the wardens couldn’t stock some for next opening I’ve no idea but we couldn’t use our oven most of the stay?. Been coming here for many years but first time with our new dog and yes the walks from the site are nice through the woods but it seems dogs are not welcome off site in the area as we came across many signs saying “ No dogs allowed” not even allowed on a leash even up to Simon’s seat a favourite walk of ours. Yes the toilet block does need a bit of modernising and the broadband was also iffy!.Perhaps on reflection we won’t be returning for a while.

The wardens stock gas as a favour to members and pay for it from their own pockets. It’s not something the club funds so I can understand the wardens not restocking and tying their own funds up this late in the season.

It could easily be different wardens next season.

Why should the Estate be expected to allow dogs on their land when it conflicts with their use of it.

In all my 20 odd years of membership I never knew the wardens funded gas sales out of their own pocket undecided which does beg the question "if it's a service for the members why does the club expect wardens to fund it?".

I don't expect estates to ' allow dogs on their land when it conflicts with their use of it' ....it's just that having walked these parts for many years without a dog we were never aware of the restrictions, my bad no one else's! I assumed the area was more dog friendly than it appears to be.

It’s a shame you won’t be visiting again soon as the reasons why not can be easily explained.

The wardens were leaving and new wardens were taking over in 2019, This is a good reason why no propane gas was available.

There is a lot of wildlife in the woods and some dogs would chase the animals. As you go down the path towards the river the left hand path will take you on a lovely  walk towards Barden Bridge. There is a sign which says dogs are welcome off lead.

As there is grouse shooting on the moor this is probably why no dogs are allowed.
