A weekend away with the 'beast from the East'
We stayed on this site for a long weekend 16/21 March, first visit to this site. Lovely location with views towards the roaches, we had a warm welcome, settled on our chosen service pitch ready to enjoy a relaxing weekend with our two dogs. The dogs had a great time in the twisting dog walk that goes in and out the trees down a whole side of the campsite.
The beast from the east arrived with snow, high winds and freezing temperatures. The dog walk had 3 foot snow drifts, dogs are not very big. The road to Buxton was closed due to snow, the roads out of Leek were closed due to snow. The A53 was very quiet for a couple of days.
The wardens were clearing paths and scatting salt etc in the late evening which I thought went beyond the call of duty, but they cleared access to toilet blocks and service points. Also salting the steeper slopes on the site road. But the worst part was the water point on the service froze. We had taken our blue supply pipe in overnight, but nothing from the tap in the morning. As we did not expect to need out water roll we left it at home, luckily we have an on board water tank, so to fill this the wardens lent us a watering can. The taps finally unfroze on 20th we had 2 out of our 4 days with water on tap.
With everything that happened, we really enjoyed our stay on this lovely site with friendly helpful wardens. Yes we will stay again but in warmer weather.
