Brilliant

Went here end of July for 5 nights. Loved the site and surrounding area. We were a bit worried after reading reviews about noisy dogs. The site was full of them, but we heard no barking at all. Some of the parents however, were very selfish though, allowing their children to play football around the vans. (Massive field right outside gates, perfect for playing ball games). The ball was kicked in to several other pitches. We were woken up at seven every morning by one man and his small, very loud daughter rolling past with aqua roll and toilet cassette. The same man returned again a few minutes later with rubbish and proceeded to clang bin lids. Every Morning???, Why??? Surely it is more neighbourly to try to keep quiet till a reasonable hour. All in all though a really lovely place to stay with lots to see and do in the area. We will return, but hopefully when children are at school

Worthwhile to visit

After reading some of the past reviews I was concerned about approach roads and how this site was going to be, but stick to the approach roads that are mentioned by the Caravan Club and you'll realise that there's nothing to worry about, the roads were fine even if you got a caravan or motorhome coming in the other direction. This is the first visit to the New Forest and we weren't disappointed. The site is well laid out, friendly wardens and very quiet. There's a choice of 3 pubs in the village but be prepared for a 50 minute walk, but enjoyable walk. The Huntsman seemed to be the busiest for eating (best to book) Unfortunately for the children there's no play area but they always seemed to be entertained by riding their bikes and it's a great place for cycling or walking. I used this site because it's approx 6 miles from the Beaulieu Museum and don't forget that Caravan Club members receive a good discount if you mention it when paying for tickets.

An enjoyable stay

We stayed here for over two weeks at the end of June. The site has been nicely refurbished but would have been better with the addition of shrubs between some of the newer pitches. Great location for walks in the New Forest and attractions in the area.

lovely site

We spent two weeks on this site last two weeks of June, we found the wardens were really friendly and the toilet block which was new last year is the best we have seen so far, it is a great site for dogs and as it was very hot a 20 minute walk takes you to a lovely stream in which the dogs can paddle and cool off. The site infomation says it promotes Perfect Pitching ?? We saw many outfits as on many other sites that seem to ignore this and pitch however they like, their were 4 caravans on two seperate pitches where they were pitched Awning to Awning !! our friend who was on the pitch next to us had to draw their curtains in the awning as the motor home next to them of euro make pitched up and pulled out their conopy so as to face towards our friend the wardens just seem to ignore this. Anyway a lovley site and a great holiday

Favourite site but too much dog barking !

This has turned into our favourite site as it is fantastic for dogs. We were there in June 18 and having a dog of our own we are obviously not averse to them, quite the contrary. Our visit this time was spoilt by somebody in a Motorhome with 5 dogs. Once one started barking they all started. What was most disappointing was that the owners were either unwilling or incapable of stopping them. Maybe the C&MC need to think about limiting the number of dogs per pitch. If you have a dog this is the site for you ( it seems from previous reviews that everybody seems to ) The New Forrest is only a 100 yds away and full of open spaces. Whilst we were there we went to Lymington on the train and Lyndhurst on the bus. Both easily accessible from Brockenhurst which is an easy 40 minute walk from the campsite. Found wardens as ever very friendly facilities great albeit maybe short of one or two more showers. I noticed that many of the people I spoke to knew other people because they all visit regularly. If you get over the cliques it says something about how good the site is. Finally, I’ve read lots about the approach road and have to say the difference between last year and this is marked and I don’t think there is any problem. I also don’t think that being off pitch at 11.30 with entry at 12 a problem.

Departure Time and Access Road

Whilst I appreciate the need for staggered arrival and departure times, due to site access road, why are members on site required to leave by 11.30 rather than new arrivals not being accepted before 12:30? At the Chatsworth Site, where access is even more restricted, requiring a marshalled queuing system, members cannot arrive before 13:00 but are still allowed to stay until 12:00. Whatever restrictions are in place problems still occur when meeting large motor homes entering or leaving sites with restricted access. Where possible the Club should consider providing passing places. I accept there is one right by the entrance to Black Knoll, but the newly surfaced road from Ober Corner has about a 30cm drop each side making it unwise to leave the road to pass large oncoming vehicles.

Lovely Site in the Heart of the New Forest

We've just spent half-term week here with the kids and were very impressed with the site and it's new toilet block. The welcome on arrival was great and the wardens were really friendly and helpful. There was a slight drama one morning when the Ladies showers decided to stop working, but nothing too major. My only slight gripe is with dogs being allowed to pee or poo on any patch of grass by their owners, when there is a massive expanse of open land right outside the gates. There were many young children playing around the site and a lot of the time on grass where kids were playing. I am sure the dog owners will say there were too many kids - but it was half-term. The fish and chip van on a Wednesday evening was very welcome and the food was delicious. The site is brilliantly located on the edge of the forest, with walks and bikes a plenty, right from the site gate and the village is only a 2 mile walk down the "yellow brick road", where there is a good selection of eateries. Can recommend the Huntsman and the Dynasty Curry House.

Nice, but not that nice!

We have just returned from five nights at Black Knowl. We love the New Forest and were looking forward to trying this site for the first time, one of the attractions was the proximity to Brockenhurst and the all new facilities. So far so good, we understand that the approach road was very bad, the immediate approach from Ober corner has been tarmacked and is as smooth as silk. The rest of the road is still pretty bad, one pothole in particular is a monster and difficult to avoid. If you are a motorhomer who goes out every day in your van then this would become a bit of a trial I would imagine. The new facilities are, as might be expected, very clean, modern and in a very attractive building. Nevertheless, there seems to be a mismatch in the proportion of showers to washbasin cubicles, and I did have to queue one morning, one shower cubicle was out of order the whole week, although I understand this is due to be sorted out in the next few days. The water from the taps on hand basins is a mere dribble, not good. As another reviewer commented the toilet seats are of poor quality and poorly fitted. On a positive note there is a code for the toilet block which is a great idea and might discourage children causing problems in the toilets. Our main complaint was the sheer number of dogs on the site. I know that any mention of dogs immediately becomes a sensitive topic, I don't have a dog but have nothing against them per se. However, the sheer number made us feel that this was a site exclusively for dog owners, within four units of us there were a total of 10 dogs, including yapping puppies. Whilst I am sure all the owners would claim they are responsible owners, it was clear to see that some of them certainly were not. There was a bag of poo on the ground just by the pedestrian gate just a few steps from a dog bin! Why?!!! Owners are requested to exercise their dogs off site, this gives rise to the early morning sneaky poopers, I watched a man at 6.30a.m. letting his dogs do their business in the roadway and quickly scooping it up hoping nobody had spotted him. The service pitches are generous and ours was pretty level. I don't understand why the wardens insist that motorhomes park to the peg as for a caravan since there is no car to accommodate. All in all it is a very pleasant site in a very convenient location, with all the new facilities to be paid for it is definitely not cheap, but with no commercial sites to provide any competition there is very limited choice if you want to be in the heart of the forest with all the amenities. Would we go there again, probably not, but if you are a dog owner then you couldn't ask for anything more - it's doggie heaven!

Bank holiday break.

Our first visit to Black knowl since redevelopment. Probably one of the best C C sites and now with an excellent new toilet and amenities block. The new hard standings are all well prepared and large enough for caravan ,awning and large car. We had service pitch which was superb. In our opinion the site is best suited to couples and not families , there appears to be no on site kids area and the site can therefore become a playground with bikes being cycled around and around. Other members have mentioned a slight ‘anti dog’ feeling with which we agree , in fact this is not only limited to Black knowl , others we have visited this year have similar dogs not to be walked on site etc etc. We have never encountered any problem with dogs on site , many caravaners choose caravan holidays so that their companions can go along too. The wardens were fantastic offering a warm welcome and advice as we needed to purchase a new water pump as ours failed on arrival.thanks to our caravan neighbors who lent a pump whilst we obtained a new one the next day locally in Brockenhurst .where there is a useful ironmongers who also sell lots of caravan spares (opposite the Honda garage).

Fantastic location

We stayed here for the Bank Holiday weekend - ideal location in the New Forest. If you have bikes and want to cycle, download free app cycleexperience and it will give you 5 routes for the Forest. Only slight moan was that, whilst toilet blocks have been refurbished, there are only 8(?) female showers and 1 was out of order for the entire weekend. The site was full for weekend and, when paying top price, it should have been sorted out beforehand
