Not My Favourite

Having chosen to stay at this site on our return leg from Cornwall via the M5, it looked like a straight forward route from junction 22, A38 up to the A368 and the site. As we were approaching from the west along the A368 and not the east as per the site directions, I rang the site to clarify that my intended route was suitable for caravans and was told that it would be fine. However, a word of warning, the A368 from the west is not the easiest of road for a novice to negotiate and the traffic unforgiving, we were almost whipped out by a truck. In hindsight, I would suggest, come by any other route than that suggested at your peril. On arrival, it was strange to have to unhitch in the arrivals bay and have our caravan taken by the staff and put on our pitch, we followed on behind in the car to our pitch for the next five nights, I understood why they like to park your van, the avenues and pitches seemed a little tight giving the feeling that you were squeezed in. The site was very tidy and well manicured and the facilities generally clean, I say generally, as I found the combined shower/toilet/washbasin unisex private rooms awash each morning after they’d been used, a problem that could be easily remedied with the provision of a mop and bucket in each. The site was unfortunately let down by the odd inconsiderate dog owner, who despite the pleasant dog walking area with even the provision of plastic bags at each gate thought nothing of leaving their dogs mess for others to deal with. Out and about, there’s an excellent but limited bus service to Bristol and Bath from the top of the road and it’s certainly the best way to go into Bristol as well as an exciting ride and the buses seem to be always right on time and worth using. We went to Bristol twice on the bus, it stops right in the centre and within easy reach of the attractions. We used the red tour bus to get our bearings the first day and had a wander around Clifton and of cause the famous bridge and gorge. The tour bus ticket is valid for two days which makes it a reasonable outlay. Nearer to home, Chew Valley Lake is a lovely place to stroll, there are numerous car parks around the lake too but there are two short nature walks that start just down the road and you can stroll (slowly) along to the Salt and Malt in less than 20 minutes, The fish and chips are very good and if your happy to eat outside, (£2.00 cheaper from their chip shop next door, and you can still buy your drinks from the bar). I was surprised that the site staff didn’t seem to know much about the area other than what was on the PC in the info room. My overwhelming impression was that the site is more concerned with its own image at the expense of its guests, which is a shame. I don’t think that I will be returning here soon.
