Here in January 2016 for 4 nights in motorhome. Friendly and helpful staff good location and easy to get to. Individual toilet, shower etc are clean and very well heated, no cars on pitch a bonus. Red Lion pub is 10 minutes walk great food but not cheap, landlord Duncan a nice guy with time to talk. Come here again - you bet.
Infrequent bus service to Bath (once a week) but to Bristol a daily service.
Brilliant Stay
This adult only site is one of the best we have stayed at. The owners and staff are all friendly and helpful. The site itself is quiet as all cars are located in the carpark, not on your pitch. The bathroom facilities were immaculate. The site is ideally located for visiting Bath, Bristol and Wells. Plenty to do in the area, National Trust etc.

A Well Above Average Site
This adults only site, has got to be one of the best kept and laid out sites. My wife and I agree it is the best one we have stayed at so far (members for 20 years). The staff and wardens were friendly and helpful throughout our stay.
If you are a caravaner, you do not have to park your own rig; a warden unhitches your van for you and couples it onto one of their Kubota tractors, takes it to your pitch and sites it perfectly for you. When you leave they de-pitch you and couple your van onto your towing vehicle for you. I think this is a sensible idea, as the site roads are narrow and parking a large caravan, with a say a large 4 x 4, would not only be difficult, but could also damage the well-manicured lawns.
I have a motorhome and I was even asked if I would like a warden to park it for me. To me this is going the extra mile to please us, their customers.
Although all cars have to be parked in the car park by reception, it is not far to walk from any part of the site and there are no restrictions on driving your car to your pitch for loading, unloading, and passenger pick-up.
The site is laid out with hedges between some pitches for extra privacy and we never felt crowded in. There are statues and carved birds in the hedge and garden areas. There is a very pleasant woodland walk on the site and a separate well maintained dog walk behind it. The well-stocked goldfish pond was a surprising, nice touch too. The whole setup feels more like a well laid out and maintained garden than a caravan site. As an added bonus, it is far enough from the main roads that that to hear a car drive by is a rarity.
There are the usual communal facilities, including dustbins for rubbish and recycling, fresh water taps and grey water disposal, the chemical disposal is in a small heated room which has a hand washing sink as well as the usual disposal drain. The serviced pitches have a post which provides the electric hook-up, water and a TV aerial socket, the grey water drain is beside the post.
Toilet facilities: there are ten cubicles, all of which can be used by both men and women; this helps alleviates the problem which sometimes occurs when one gender bathroom is crowded to overflowing, while the other is not full at all. Each cubicle has its own shower, wash-basin, toilet, hand drier and hair drier. All of these cubicles are cleaned about four times per day, and the shower curtains are changed for clean ones at least once a week.
This is a site you could relax on if you decided to have a day of rest and the local area is very pleasant too.
The only downside is that public transport is not great from Bishop Sutton, so you really need your own wheels; however the site does have a reasonably priced hire car you can book.
We had to leave a few days early due to illness, and the site does not give refunds for leaving early, unless they manage to re-hire your pitch. I was pleasantly surprised to receive an email a couple of days later saying they had re-hired
Nice Site
Nice clean well presented site with friendly helpful staff.Good pub in the village and a well stocked shop/P/Office.Disappointed not to be able to walk the shore of the lake.If you are m/homers and wish to visit Bath by bus make sure you are there on a Wednesday because there is only one bus a week.
Daily buses to Bristol though. We came here on recommendations, but I think it's safe to say we won't be racing back. Can't win them all.
Can't understand the bad reviews
We've just got back from a 5 day trip to Chew Valley and we had a great time at this wonderful site. We arrived early which wasn't a problem as our pitch was vacant. We was ask to drop out van by the barrier and a site chap sited it for us which to me was great after dragging the thing five hours across the country. The shower cubicles are unisex but to me that wasn't a problem as I locked the door. There was mops and buckets provided outside the cubicles but some visitors left them in the cubicles so you had to look for them. There is a friendly local pub close by which serves great food. Overall this is a great, quiet, clean, and friendly site situated in the middle of some beatiful places to visit.
Not My Favourite
Having chosen to stay at this site on our return leg from Cornwall via the M5, it looked like a straight forward route from junction 22, A38 up to the A368 and the site. As we were approaching from the west along the A368 and not the east as per the site directions, I rang the site to clarify that my intended route was suitable for caravans and was told that it would be fine. However, a word of warning, the A368 from the west is not the easiest of road for a novice to negotiate and the traffic unforgiving, we were almost whipped out by a truck. In hindsight, I would suggest, come by any other route than that suggested at your peril.
On arrival, it was strange to have to unhitch in the arrivals bay and have our caravan taken by the staff and put on our pitch, we followed on behind in the car to our pitch for the next five nights, I understood why they like to park your van, the avenues and pitches seemed a little tight giving the feeling that you were squeezed in. The site was very tidy and well manicured and the facilities generally clean, I say generally, as I found the combined shower/toilet/washbasin unisex private rooms awash each morning after they’d been used, a problem that could be easily remedied with the provision of a mop and bucket in each. The site was unfortunately let down by the odd inconsiderate dog owner, who despite the pleasant dog walking area with even the provision of plastic bags at each gate thought nothing of leaving their dogs mess for others to deal with.
Out and about, there’s an excellent but limited bus service to Bristol and Bath from the top of the road and it’s certainly the best way to go into Bristol as well as an exciting ride and the buses seem to be always right on time and worth using. We went to Bristol twice on the bus, it stops right in the centre and within easy reach of the attractions. We used the red tour bus to get our bearings the first day and had a wander around Clifton and of cause the famous bridge and gorge. The tour bus ticket is valid for two days which makes it a reasonable outlay. Nearer to home, Chew Valley Lake is a lovely place to stroll, there are numerous car parks around the lake too but there are two short nature walks that start just down the road and you can stroll (slowly) along to the Salt and Malt in less than 20 minutes, The fish and chips are very good and if your happy to eat outside, (£2.00 cheaper from their chip shop next door, and you can still buy your drinks from the bar). I was surprised that the site staff didn’t seem to know much about the area other than what was on the PC in the info room.
My overwhelming impression was that the site is more concerned with its own image at the expense of its guests, which is a shame. I don’t think that I will be returning here soon.
Oh dear!
Beautifully kept site and pleasant staff, but there was no mention in the Caravan Club book that the toilets and showers were shared with the men on this site. Never come across this before, and didn't like it one bit. There were 9 showers and toilets so they could easily have divided them for men and women. Also, when I went to have a shower it wasn't the cleanest I've ever used. This means we will not be staying again.
A site that believes it’s own marketing hype.
Please park outside and our guy will site YOUR caravan – Not for us thank you..
Please fill in the voting form for Practical Caravan 2015 Top Caravan site nominations – No thanks We’ll decide if you warrant my vote.
Please note that you must leave your caravan in the car park – aesthetically pleasing for the management at Chew Valley but annoying for the paying public.
The eleven luxury! bathrooms are ALL unisex so become overcrowded first thing in morning. No facility for cleaning the shower after use so late afternoon they are a no go area. Chew Valley must try harder.
Bath Chew Valley is not anywhere near Bath a good thirty minute steady drive,. We were lead to believe the bus service to Bristol is OK !
Good points : staff friendly and helpful, ample sized flat pitches (without the car), beautiful nature area for wild life, great dog walking area for four legged visitors.
Visit the Salt & Malt fish and chip shop on Chew Valley Lake half a mile from site – highlight of our week.
Overall: not for us I’m afraid although as the site was full with visitors willing to stump up for minimum of seven night stay I don’t suppose the owners care.
Disappointing Site
The site is well kept and very tidy. Unfortunately all the staff we met were somewhat abrupt and not very welcoming. On arrival the lady in reception knew our name before we announced who we were and after asking us for the balance of what we owed in addition to our deposit, handed us a form asking us to consider supporting the site to win a national award after adding' if you find your stay enjoyable' We were then told to unhitch our caravan from the car as it would be towed to our pitch by their tractor driver. He arrived quickly telling us to follow behind him in our car to the pitch. He placed a piece of wood 4" wide under the offside tyre (no exaggeration, I measured it!) I queried it was rather narrow but he just dismissed my observation. Without saying anything he indicated in a parallel hands motion, to park our car alongside the hitch while he sited our caravan. No allowance was made for the water container space between the pitch and the grass edge which had wooden edging to it, or the position of the alko wheel lock.
He placed a 4" wide piece of wood ( I measured it!) Before leaving us he put a spirit level over the front window to ensure the van was level. We assumed he was not a caravanner as drainage is important. When we were left alone we resited the caravan properly using our own wood which is the correct width for the tyre. The individual washroom and toilet cubicles are very clean but are unisex. Notices telling the ladies where to place certain discarded private items are not very appealing and it would be more acceptable to both sexes to have their own cubicles. In the morning cleaning finishes with the floors left soaked in water and there are no squeegy mops to prevent guests thinking they would be better with webbed feet. Vehicles are not allowed to be sited with caravans and we were told to move the car as soon as our things were offloaded. Visitors are charged £2 per person per day to visit guests and must leave the site by 6pm, unless the management gives permission to waiver this rule. Internet in the library was so slow it was almost unworkable. If personal internet is required the charges are quite high. The individual washrooms and toilet cubicles are very clean but are unisex.
We paid £28 per night to stay on the site so perhaps the internet could be included in the high fees levied. Visitors are charged £2 per person per day to visit guests and must leave the site by 6pm, unless the management gives permission to waiver this rule. We spoke to a number of caravan owners on site and we all had very similar views. Like us they each said they would not be returning. That is a shame because all the criticisms could easily be addressed. Being an adults only site we wonder if it is really necessary to have so many signs telling guests not to do this and that and you get the feeling the owners are trying to make rather over emphasised rules. When leaving you are not allowed to hitch your own caravan to the c
