We’ve been wanting to try the Baltic Wharf site for some time. On the old booking system it seemed to be one of those popular ones that were always fully booked, then came the notices of closure due to redevelopment of the area by the local authority. However, the club notified me by email that the lease on the site had again been extended until December 2023 and so I attempted to book as an extension to our stay at the Four Oaks site at Henley on Thames. Bingo! We were in. We took the M4 from Henley to Bristol, and other than a slightly complicated final mile or so through Bristol City centre with its roadworks, we landed safe and sound.
I can confirm it is a site well worth visiting. A gate out of site onto the riverside walk either into the city, or next door to the pub. Fantastic history surrounds you and all is very well documented on boards. Plenty of easy access to pubs, restaurants, cafés or whatever you want. Our stay in February was blessed with beautiful sunny weather and clear blue skies too. No issues at all with the services and friendly helpful staff.
Our camper van is 6.4 metres long, and I would say this is around a maximum for easy access through the roadworks, with some pitches also restricted to this as a maximum length. But all in all, very highly recommended.
Great Site
What a shame this site is closing at the end of March.
Fantastic position to walk around the Floating Harbour and to walk up to the Clifton Suspension Bridge. We parked up on Saturday and never used our campervan until our return on Wednesday. Bristol Cathedral and St. Marys Redcliffe are a must, such magnificent buildings. Baltic Wharf would have definitely been on our return list but sadly that is not to be. We are so glad we visited when we did.
Close by is the Orchard pub, super selection of still ciders (counted 17) and real ales (only sandwiches, pies and pasties for food), even closer is the Cottage pub, a Butcombe brewery pub with all their ales and a good pub food menu.
Fantastic site
We visited this site again last week.
It is a fantastic site close to the centre and it our favourite place to visit.
It’s a great shame that the council don’t see the benefit of all the visitors to Bristol this site brings.
Great friendly staff, I hope they find a new site soon.
A Superb location
Its a sad day, as we have left Baltic Wharf for the last time, as I understand it closes at the end of Dec 2022. Its got the best location for a City break we have been to, with pubs restaurants, places to see and shops all within a reasonable walking distance. I really hope the club find another location in Bristol
Last visit ?
After so many wonderful trips to this site and Bristol it looks like this will be last time.
Its such a shame Bristol Council don't appreciate this site is valued by visitors who spend a lot of time and money in the area.
Flats for sale all along waterside .with lots more under construction.
Its been under threat of closure for years with no money being spent but still people visit.seems the council just don't consider what so many see as an asset.
Handy buses and pubs (some better than others)
Never know but if builder go bust site might still remain open!!
Excellent
Arrived for 1 night only, knew site was in verge of closing, full credit to the wardens for a clean tidy site, showers, toilets immaculate. Easy access to docks and pub nearby. Lots of roadworks outside, unfortunately trashed a plant pot coming in, however cannot say how accommodating wardens where and helpful, would be nice if the city council allowed the site to stay.
Great Site and Awesome Managers
So a site so close to a city Centre, and having read the reviews we were expecting the worst in terms of noise and distractions but this could not be further from the truth, and we really wanted to visit this site!
Being so close to a vibrant city you can hear ambulances and police cars at any time of day but the road outside the site does not really disturb, even with the building work.
This is all put in perspective by the amount of bars, restaurants and attractions you can walk to from the site. The first time you walk through the gate at the back at of site onto the Wharf can only be described as a wow moment. The Wharf is so picturesque, and the places to visit would take several weeks to explore them all. We tried as many as we could during our 6 night stay.
The Cottage next to site is a great place to sit and see what’s going on the Wharf, although we did not eat here we had drinks most evenings and the food being served looked excellent. Just across and a short walk is the Pump House, great service and we can recommend the mussels and Crab filled potato skins.
A short walk when turning right out of the codded gate take you to Cargo 1&2, small businesses and restaurants all built in shipping containers, we ate at Gambas Tapas bar. The service and quality of the food was amazing, even if we did not understand half of the menu. Walk a little further and you come to some familiar chains, Revolución de Cuba, Wetherspoons (V-Shed), Piano and Pitcher and several others.
We travelled from Staffordshire during major HS2 works on the M42 so left early but where worried about arriving early, so called the site, they could not have been more friendly. They explained that they could not accept early arrivals but if it was only a few minutes they would try and help. When we finally arrived another 45 minutes later and well past the earliest check in time we had a good laugh with site managers who told us they were not worried, they clearly knew the traffic around the City better than us an knew it was not going to take us only 15 minutes to complete the last 4 miles.
When arriving take care as there are lots of road closed around the City and make sure you approach the site from Commercial Road travelling West down Cumberland Road as you cannot currently get to the site travelling the other way which I know caused others on site a few problems, and even our Uber driver bringing us back from a great meal at Revolución de Cuba.
We had a great week here and will certainly be back again providing the lease gets further extensions.
Work required!
This site has long been my favourite destination close to the harbour and city centre, and great to visit any time of the year. But on my last visit mid September 22 I have to saw I think it is beginning to show its age and the fact that the axe is about to fall, although the toilet shower block was clean enough the seats in the shower cubicles were in a right state. I think if you sat on them you would probably need a tetanus injection soon after, dirt and rust being the main problem, I can understand why they are not being replaced but I think it would be better to remove them altogether rather than chancing someone being hurt!
I still like the site and if it could continue that would be great but there is a lot of work needed to return it to it's former glory.
The best site on the network
I will keep returning to Baltic Wharf for as long as it remains open, for one reason: location, location, location. In the heart of one of England's great historic cities in the beautiful county of Somerset. Walking out of the back gate onto the harbourside and seeing the masts of SS Great Britain and the colourful buildings opposite is magic. Long may it remain.
All things Bristol
We managed to get a booking during the Bristol Harbour Festival. And even outside the festival weekend the location of Baltic Wharf is superb for all things Bristol. The site wardens, Emma and Steve, are very welcoming and maintain the site and (aging) facilities to a good standard. Whilst Baltic Wharf is not a quiet site it is hard to beat such a convenient location so close to a city centre. It will be a very sad day indeed when this site eventually closes.
