Potentially very nice but ruined

I usually read reviews and take very little notice until I visit a site for myself. This site has a lot of potential and the modern facilities are lovely with great walks. Without the main aspect that I shall mention shortly the site was let down by 1. Police visits on two occasions. Unsure why they visited but does make you feel uneasy 2. Grass very long and clearly has not been cut for a long time 3. Yes there are travellers. But to be fair they were very pleasant whilst our children shared the playground. 4. Dangerous metal gate to playground. 2 of my children were hit on the head by strongly sprung gate and sadly the family on the pitch adjacent had a vist to hospital because their son was badly hurt with a large cut on face due to the gate. The largest concerning point, one of which I thought I would never encounter whilst staying at a club site was the incredibly loud music being played from 8pm until 11.10pm. At 10pm I had had enough and decided to visit the warden who I could not find. The music was so loud that I could here it across the whole site. It was coming from a group camped in tents down the far end of the site. There were guests all standing outside their units trying to find out where it was coming from. Considering this is a very large site, to hear it everywhere shows you the volume it was being played at. As I previously mentioned, I usually take no notice of reviews and never thought I’d feel obliged to write one myself, as I sometimes feel the comments made are fussy and people should lower their expectations. But in this occasion. Wow. Never thought I’d encounter this. Will not be back to this site. Such a shame as it has potential to be lovely. I am expecting the usual copied and pasted response from the club that says a lot without saying anything that you can see from the plethora of negative reviews about this particular site.

Lovely site

We stayed here for a week and found the site very peaceful, clean and well maintained. The barriers into and exiting the site are very easy as they have traffic lights indicating when to proceed. We met up with our daughters who were camping in tents and the site staff went out of their way to be helpful as they were arriving late after work. We found nothing was too much trouble and the the staff were all very friendly. The site is in a lovely area, we visited Box Hill and Epsom Downs, lovely for dog walking. We will be booking this site again next summer for our family get together as its the best we've stayed on. Thank you!

Uncomfortable stay

I stayed for five nights and my stay had an edge to it thanks to a "white van" family. They pitched across two grass pitches, drove fast the wrong way around the site, threw loads of rubbish into the hedge, left their Jack Russells tied up and barking one afternoon, had two visits from the police. One of the dogs bit another camper on his leg when he went to talk to them, the father called me an idiot because I didn't want to sell my motorhome to him! I like the site and the wardens did what they could but I wouldn't rush back. Make the site members only or charge a refundable "damage refund" may be a way to change the customer base. This was the first time that I have warned a new arrival about who they were parking up next to - they moved pitches.

Comment from the Club:

Thank you for your review and I’m sorry you feel that your stay was uncomfortable as a result of other site users' behaviour. As an inclusive organisation, and bearing in mind the law on these matters, the Club do not discriminate against any particular individuals or groups and membership is open to all. With the size of membership that we enjoy, which helps fund the facilities everyone benefits from, diversity across our membership is inevitable. Any unwelcome behaviour from members or guests is always handled appropriately and where necessary, suitable follow up action is taken. We hope that you consider returning to site in the future.

Lovely site except for large noisy ‘family groups’

We had a 2 night stay here in July, just after opening. The site is easy to find but when you arrive the barriers give some cause for concern - very robust metal barriers. The staff and welcome were very friendly and professional and we pitched on the top road area. Within 5 minutes we were aware that we were in the middle of several large family groups, all with barking and snarling dogs and a variety of white vans. We decided to move pitch to the lower part of the site. This area was very peaceful until 7am when all the white vans drove past on their way to the exit. This is not what I would expect from a CMC site and whilst we cannot fault the location, facilities and staff we would not stay again.

Comment from the Club:

Thank you for your review and we're sorry your visit did not meet your expectations. One of the reasons for the barriers, as well as the safety of members, is that there is a large storage facility at this site. With the size of membership that we enjoy, which helps fund the facilities everyone benefits from, diversity across our membership is inevitable. Any unwelcome behaviour from members or guests is always handled appropriately and where necessary, suitable follow up action is taken.

Great site, but ---

This is a lovely site set in beautiful countryside, great walks around. We use this site to visit family in the area. The Wardens worked hard to make sure everything was done to make our stay safe during the present time. The only "down side" is that you have to be careful where to pitch because site always seems to have travellers staying. We had a really bad experience a few years ago which ended in travellers fighting after a night' s drinking. Like the previous reviewer has said, rules don't exist for them. We have just returned after a week at Alderstead but as soon as we noticed the travellers we pitched well away from their area and had a lovely time.

Overnight stop on way home

Only had a one night stay as we are on way home after our winter trip to Spain. First must add we did the wrong thing and just followed the Sat Nag... don't do it people, read the book first. The site is very pleasant if a bit long winded on the way out but its a nice place. Staff so friendly a nice wave first thing Sunday morning even if it was cold while the lady warden was out doing the boring dustbin rounds. Toilets as normal perfect and nice and warm. We went out Geocaching with one cache not far from the gates to the site so that must be good , others across a field and along the road which had more traffic than we expected. Good that one is dedicated to members of the RAF who died in a 1944 plane crash.

Excellent Site

It's a few years since we have been to this site. Nice to see that toilet blocks have been refurbished. The site is being kept very tidy and clean. All credit to winter site staff.

Very spacious site, good location

This is a lovely, open site with large pitches and plenty of space - like being in the country but well situated to visit London and other places of interest. Claremont Landscape Garden was lovely. We saw a fair amount of wildlife - squirrels, a woodpecker, tree creeper, tits, magpies and the green parakeets. A bird feeder is better entertainment than the TV! Despite the background hum of traffic and the occasional wail of a car alarm, it is a site we'd return to for easy access to places of interest whilst still feeling removed from the city. Staff were lovely, loads of showers, all very clean and tidy. But do avoid that hill when you are towing - it's a killer!!
