Peace. And owls.

This little site is a gem. Some of the pitches are a bit tricky to get onto, but don't let that put you off. Aberbran is perfect if you like to get away from it all and enjoy some peace and quiet. Owls hooting was the only sound at night, and during the day birdsong is the thing you'll hear most. Brecon isn't the prettiest town in the world but the canal is lovely. Talybont on Usk, just a few miles away, is very pretty, has several pubs and a cafe, and is a good starting point for a canalside walk. If you don't want to follow the canal it's just a few miles stroll to the reservoir along the old tram track, and there are lovely views of the hills from there. The Brecon Beacons themselves are wonderful for walks on a good day. Don't attempt anything if the weather is bad, but if you are blessed with sunny days then the wide path from the lay-by after the Storey Arms to the summit of PenYFan is well worth a walk. Yes, there will be lots of people (from tiny tots to those of more mature years) but the views from the top are amazing. And for an insight into the mining history of South Wales, the Big Pit at Blaenavon is superb. Parking is £3 for the day and entry to the museum is free. You get an underground tour with an ex miner, and the interactive exhibit is probably the best we have ever seen. There are so many great things to do in this area, and Aberbran is an excellent base.
