Having read all the reviews we were full of anticipation for our visit to this site. We were not disappointed. Certainly the best site we have stayed in for town/city location. We hoped not to repeat our Tewkesbury horror experience (our habitation check confirmed the damage caused on our roof!) and Abbey Wood came up trumps.
We couldn't fault the staff, the location and the fantastic bird song that was as varied and exotic as the parakeets. Yes, it's a bit of a hike back up the hill but the convenience of the station, taxis etc puts the site back on our to do list for our motorhome.
Thank you again for your care and attention to detail.
We stayed here for a pre-Christmas visit in 2016 and really enjoyed our stay so we were happy to return a couple of weekends ago. We found Knee Hill to be absolutely fine for our small PVC but agree that it might be tricky for caravans or very large outfits. The wardens were very welcoming on arrival and I particularly appreciated the additional handout to the site leaflet that contained lots of useful information. The sheet regarding travel into central London which also contains a map showing the nearest fuel station was also really helpful. As always with CAMC sites the facilities were clean and warm. You can hear some traffic noise but really very little given that the site is in London. You'd be forgiven for thinking you were in a rural site, some of the trees are very old and really quite beautiful. We saw woodpeckers and parakeets from our van window as well as squirrels. There was a fox wandering around at night which I also enjoyed seeing. Travel into London on the train with a tube journey and return cost about £8 each which is very reasonable. Surely the best way to stay in London!
We stayed here Fri to Mon for an O2 weekend festival in our caravan and we also had family members renting a glamping pod. On arrival the wardens were the best making us feel really welcome, they explained the best way to get to the O2 and offered information for the site giving advice so that we made the most of our mini break. We followed the CC directions which were very easy ensuring we got to the site safely. The facilities on site were clean and warm just what you expect from a caravan club site. The site is thoroughly recommended for a quiet break or if you want to travel into London, we will be visiting again! Thank you.
This was our first time visiting Abbey Wood. We found the route circuitous travelling from Dartford Crossing, but understood once we arrived. The narrow road down Knee Hill is not suitable for turning left into Federation Road for caravans or motorhomes. However by using the roundabout at the bottom of the hill, motorhomers could easily then make the right turn. The site was perfect for our short break and we were able to travel by train to Chatham, to the Historic Naval Dockyard. There is a Sainsbury supermarket on the other side of the train tracks and there are frequent buses out to Thamesmead shopping centre: Argos, Morrisons and Aldi. Facilities on site were immaculate and the wardens have worked extremely hard to clear all the dead leaves from the grassed areas and under shrubs. We enjoyed watching the squirrels and it was lovely to wake to the sound of woodpeckers each morning. We will certainly be visiting again.
Stayed for a couple of nights so we could visit London.
Warm welcome by the wardens.
Toilet block could do with updating but very clean.
Railway station only a 10 minute walk.
Personally would stay at Commons Wood if going to visit the Capital again as its a lot easier to get to off the motorway than Abbey Wood.
Arrived at abbey wood 14/1/19 for along w/end break, advisable to follow club advise for directions "DO NOT" follow sat nav, the roads closer to site are a bit tight (suburban streets) with serious speed humps M/H at 9 mtrs, glad we weren't towing small car as normal, Nuff said.
Site is good, though make sure you have levelling blocks you will need them, facilities are clean and tidy + reasonably close to all pitches but showers looking a bit tired, bus stop 5min, 180 to cutty sark every 5min mon thru sat about every 30 mins on a sun, trains a 10 min stroll though none on a Sunday.
Site staff not very helpful, don't ask them about bus times they don't know😤, one dear lady did have a ready smile though. All in all good for central London but would not return.
Remember, this is a site in a densely populated zone, there is noise, there is tranquility, there is much wildlife, there is an abundance of choice of bus route, there are regular trains and there are many people of different cultures. We love it.
Last time we visited there was an unpleasant atmosphere which the wardens at the time explained was being dealt with. Well, it has been. The wardens are now very different, the site is very different, it is tidy, well pruned, no longer unkempt and the old vehicles and white work vans parked on pitches have gone. There is a more open feeling to the whole site and visibility all round is good. The facilities have been deep cleaned and there is a good feel about the area. We spent Sunday to Sunday here on one pitch. Weenjoyed all the usual trips into the city via train. As usual no issues. We enjoyed a show, Aladdin, in London and did not feel any unease returning at midnight.
We are pleased this site has been turned around for the better ioho. Hopefully it won’t take another year for us to return.
I've stayed at Abbey Wood a few times recently due to having a family member in hospital in London. It is lovely site and the location is great for visiting London. The train station is less than a 10 minute walk away and trains into the centre of London are very frequent. There's also a large Sainsburys at the other side of the train station and a few convenience shops in the village centre.
If you were coming for reasons other than hospital visiting, it is also close the Greenwich and I'm sure you could have a great time in the city and then retreat to the relative peace of the site.
Having previously stayed in our motorhome at Abbey Wood we decided to give a Swift SPod 4 a try for a four night visit in January 2019.
First the good news. The glamping pod was well prepared and warm on our arrival. But we quickly realised the drawbacks to using these glamping pods when it is freezing outside.
Swift do not appear to have insulated the floor, which was always cold, no matter how warm the air temperature in the pod.
Heating in the bathroom is confined to a heated towel rail, plus any warm air that spills in from the lounge. There's not much of that, so a room you really want to be warm when stepping out of the shower never quite lived up to expectations.
Heating in the lounge is by way of blown air heating. Switch it off and the pod rapidly cools. But my wife and I don't like blown air heating when trying to sleep. It's rather noisy, and dries the air, leading to stuffy noses. But switch it off, and by morning the internal temperature is close to outside temperatures. A bit like camping in a tent. So for us the lesser evil was to leave the heating on overnight. Not good. Matters are made worse because Swift have designed an external vent, roughly letter box size, that admits cold air from outside. There's no control over it, so we used a cushion to block it.
The kitchen has a microwave and fridge, but is small. In motorhome terms it's more Chausson than Autotrail.
Apart from that, we liked it, and would use a pod again, but only when overnight temperatures are likely to exceed 15°C.
Visited for a 3 night stay over the New Year in our Motor home.
Great location near train links to London and local supermarkets and shops a 10 min walk away.
Site has nice layout trees all round, very quiet considering location with good security gates upon entry.
Although our fully serviced pitch was not very flat and we left our ramps at home so had the usual roll over in bed. Some appeared leveler than others but sadly not ours on a quiet site.
Would give it 5 stars if it wasn't for all the toilet facilities being closed at the same time! Come on guys we all know you keep the facilities in tip top condition but a little more consideration wouldn't go amiss for use of toilets and showers. My wife and myself left without showering on the day of departure along with several other stranded campers who also wanted to use the any of the facility blocks (which there are at least 3 that we tried all closed)
