Basic and facilities need a rethink

As others have said, we got a warm welcome from the site owner and her dog. We stayed here a few years ago when starting to walk the Thames Path, and it served a purpose then for a couple of nights' stay. This time we stayed for 4 nights to explore the local area a bit more - the many lakes of the Cotswold Wildlife Park are great for walking around and wildlife watching, and nearby historic towns like Cricklade and Lechlade are well worth a visit. The site is certainly basic, but for £12 a night including electric hook-up (2024 price), maybe one shouldn't be too critical. However, we noted the following issues during our stay: The fresh water point is a rusty old tap in a ramshackle shed - it would have been more hygienic on an external wall. The waste and recycling facilities are a bit hit-and-miss, and the single EHU point for the whole site is fed by a catenary wire overhead. A number of 3-way power adapters are plugged in to this point, to provide electricity to each user; this could potentially cause overload problems. More worrying still is the chemical waste emptying point, which has a large horizontal plastic pipe feeding into a metal tank. It's impossible to empty a waste holding container into the pipe without spilling some of the contents on the ground, and also on your shoes...lovely! I reported this issue in particular to the owner, so hopefully something will be done to improve matters soon. Oh, and one more thing.....there were several 'permanent residents' in old caravans in evidence during our stay; I suspect they weren't abiding by the 30-day rule! Apart from the above-mentioned issues, we quite enjoyed our stay, believe it or not!

Short Stay

Mrs Shepard was very friendly when she came round to collect payment but I didn’t see her again. Very very basic site. Grass pitches very close together. 3 hook up adapters off one ehu but electric didn’t trip during my stay. Drinking water was a hose with a tap inside a shed. The chemical disposal point was a small piece of guttering/ pipe jutting out of the wall and a tap on the end of a fixed pipe to rinse, hand sanitizer supplied ! There were two bins behind a wall for rubbish. The ‘facilities’ were a little bit of a walk over very uneven ground so this site is not suitable for anyone with walking difficulties. The site could really benefit from some signage as there isn’t any signs or notices advising where the facilities are located. The pitches are not marked, I was told I could pitch anywhere then another small caravan came in later and pitched quite close next to me, if I had put my awning up they would of been parked almost on top of it. The site has easy access but the road noise can be a problem as tractors cars and lorries use the road next to the site. There is a local shop 3 miles away run by volunteers and 3 big fields to walk the dog. I would not advise walking from site as the traffic at 50mhp can be stressful to walk against. This site really is a stop over, I wouldn’t stay any longer.

Dont forget the dog

An ideal back to basics CL

An ideal, for us, back to basics CL. No bells and whistles but a lovely warm welcome from both the humans and the dog :-). A flat site in 2 small areas, with good approach roads and easy access to the fields. Nice views across the farmland and good cycling into Cirencester and the local area. Telephone signal is not great but TV is fine. Will go there again when in the area :-)

Basic

We used this site as an overnight stop (in mid May 2019) and was good enough for what we needed. The owners were both very nice people. The site was easy to get to which is what we needed for a stop-over.

Could do Better

We chose this site to meet with friends for a couple of nights so it worked for us. However, most of the acre (well, it's more like a 0.25 acre) was used for storing vans and for long term stays. It does have lots of potential but I don't think that Yvonne (lovely as she is) will do anything to improve things. If you want a cheap long term stay then this is for you. If you want a pretty stay for a few days to explore then maybe look elsewhere. Phone signal on Three did not exist. Wouldn't go back.
