Good location for exploring, but take blocks!
Great location for exploring the wall, being just a 5 minute drive from the Roman Army Museum and 20 minutes from Vindolanda.
As reported by others, the site slopes. A lot. And for certain pitches it slopes both front to back and side to side. It took us quite a while to finally settle on a spot. The ground is also rock hard, making it hard to hammer in awning pegs. A week with a digger and some topsoil would solve these issues and transform the site.
There no grey water disposal point, just chemical.
There are no public footpaths immediate by the site, and as we didn’t see the owners we didn’t know where we could and couldn’t walk with the dogs.
The walk from Gilsland to Birdoswald is highly recommended.
