A tranquil place in Wiltshire
We have just come back from a wonderful weekend at Totteridge Farm where we were warmly welcomed by Mutley and Caroline.
We saw the article on the farm in the Caravan Club Magazine and as it is just a short distance from our home in Swindon and ideal for a weekend away, we thought we would try it out.
It's a picturesque peaceful location overlooking hills and valleys, with a railway line running through the bottom of the valley in the distance. I mention this because we were treated to the sight and sound of a steam train on Saturday afternoon.
On Sunday morning as we sat having our first cup of tea of the day, we witnessed a couple of birds of prey immediately in front of our motor home, which briefly perched on the fence in front before flying away.
The site itself is a large grassed area on the approach to the farm, which has plenty of taps so you can top up your water and good waste and grey water disposal points plus recycling and waste bins. You can also purchase fresh eggs from a hutch close by, where you are trusted to just leave your money.
It's so peaceful and at night, with a clear sky, I can imagine that you would have a perfect view of the stars as there's virtually no light pollution.
We arrived after 3 weeks of dry weather followed by 2 days of constant rain and the ground was understandably a little soggy. With Mutley's help our friends had parked their van and when it was our turn, he gave us clear instructions on how to approach the wet ground and we found ourselves perfectly positioned to enjoy the view.
As it was still a bit soggy on Sunday, Mutley kindly pulled us of the grass using his tractor. This is great because it means you can use this site at any time of the year regardless of the weather conditions.
Away from the site, you are close to the Kennet and Avon Canal and can enjoy lovely walks in either direction. We did a circular walk using the ordnance survey map along the canal to Pewsey and then out through Pewsey towards Milton Lilbourne, joining a track a bit further on that eventually took us back into the village of Milton Lilbourne. Caroline also informed me that you can walk to the top of the hill facing the site as there is a footpath visible. As it appears from a distance to be quite high, this could be a challenge!
If you want to eat out, there is the Royal Oak at Wootton Rivers which is really nice and a number of pubs in Pewsey itself, as well as a wine bar, Indian and Chinese Restaurants and takeaways.
We can't praise this site enough. Mutley and Caroline are themselves owners of a motor home and travel extensively in it so they know what we want when we want to get away from it all.
In a way, I'm almost reluctant to post this review as it means that we might struggle to get a pitch in the future if more people are attracted to it after reading our review!
Although we only spent a weekend, it is so perfectly situated so that you could spend much longer there, as there's plenty to see and do.
