We have just returned from an 8 night stay at The Hawthornes. A lovely cl within walking distance of Pickering. Paula and John gave us a friendly greeting and during our time there were always happy to have a chat despite them being busy with their work.
The site does have a slope but my husband managed to get our setup level. It is near the main road into Pickering. We were not bothered by the traffic. It certainly didn’t disturb our sleep 😀.
The toilet was always spotlessly clean. Neither of us used the shower as we prefer to use our own in the caravan.
Close by is a pub that does some tasty meals and there was always a warm welcome when we popped in. The Middleton post office has a quaint tea room and again the welcome and food was to a good standard.
We will most definitely be looking to book again when we next visit Pickering & North Yorkshire.
Perfect for Pickering
Delightful site. Warm and friendly with lovely views south. Gentle slope so a bit of chocking needed to level the rig. Nice and clean facilities. Pleasant paved walk into Pickering. It’s about mile and a half, but there are a few pubs on route. There is a bus stop right outside the site, but we preferred to walk. We had a lovely time there and would definitely go back.
First venture of 2021
We chose The Hawthornes as the place to be for our first ex lockdown trip of 2021 and have to say that the week just isn’t long enough
The site is easily reached being just off the main road - there is a little traffic noise but nothing at all to concern as it’s only mainly at the usual rush hour times.
A true and proper CL with plenty of space for the allowed 5 vans - the pitches are not marked so you can choose the spot you want (within reason) and position your unit in the orientation you like.
You will need some levelling blocks if you have a longish unit as the site does slope away but it’s again nothing too bad - managed to level our 27’ van.
The field is all grass and really well drained and it’s only a short wander to the water point which is situated away from grey and toilet disposal area
Toilets were very clean and kept clean - there is plenty of hot water for hand washing and sanitiser for the surfaces you touch provided to keep everyone safe.
There is even a choice of home made preserves for sale (excellent!) but we missed out on the coconut cake :(
Plenty of room for dog exercise on the fields behind or walking around the area
We liked it so much we have rebooked for our next stay. Paula and John keep the place just as it should be.
Hope that the traction engine might be having an outing next time we are there!!
Great location, but probably not suited to a long motorhome
We have a 7.4metre motorhome. We stayed at The Hawthornes for three nights, which was fine, but we could not get level even with automatic levelling, so I guess it would be impossible with ramps. Some road noise, but only really intrusive morning and evening. Toilets were clean every time we used them. We didn’t use the shower so can’t comment. Perfect location for exploring this area. Short walk along a back road to the local shop (at the services). Tea shop in village - excellent scones and sandwiches! Good meal at The Middleton Arms. 30 minute walk into Pickering, with all it’s attractions, including steam railway. On a bus route, but we didn’t use so can’t comment on it. We walked from the site up into the beautiful countryside around. We couldn’t locate Mrs Appleby to pay, so we put the money in an envelope through the letterbox.
Weeks break
We had a similar experience to a previous review. The owner of the campsite was busy with her horse and we weren’t able to pay until the next day. We chose this campsite as it had the added advantage of a shower and toilet and although the shower was always lovely and hot we were extremely disappointed that in our seven nights stay the toilets were not cleaned at all and the bin was also not emptied. The toilet seat was broken, there was a bucket and mop outside to wash the floor after showering but again this was not changed and was full of muddy water.
We feel that this has let the campsite down and we can’t understand why they have these facilities but are not prepared to keep them clean?
On a positive note, the area is lovely and we enjoyed lots of walks and cycling.
Warm welcome chilly weather
We picked a cold but sunny fortnight at this great site the views over the Vale of Pickering are excellent. Paula was a fabulous host. The shower and loo are good and kept clean the extra loo is always a bonus. I have only taken off 1 point on peace and tranquility because of slight road noise but it didn't spoil our stay. Many places to visit and all within easy reach. Hope to visit again.
Lovely week
OK we managed to pick a week of glorious April weather which always helps, but we really enjoyed our week’s stay at The Hawthornes. We sited ourselves as we had been advised to do if the owners were out. We saw Paula the next day and were made welcome. Yes the site slopes and long caravans may have an issue with levelling. Our 5m van was OK. The facilities we found were fine, very clean toilet. We didn’t try the shower, our caravan has a perfectly good one. Our daughter stayed a night at Paula’s b&b and for £7.50 each, we joined her for a massive English cooked breakfast, recommended!! Easy to pay by bank transfer for site and b&b fees. The on site WiFi is free but speed drops noticeably at evening time. Both EE and 3 coverage was good. TV was better if the NE was tuned in (Feeeview) but local weather forecast was more specific to Scarborough and north.
Others have mentioned road noise. The EHU points are at the top of the field and this is where most folk pitch up. Yes, there is road noise as would be expected from Google Earth research prior to booking but it didn’t really bother us and we did sit out occasionally as it was warm.
We would be happy to return there.
Few days break
On arrival owner was grooming horse of which she said she might be on phone earlier. She said we could go and pitch up, weren’t told were to fill up with water as we have a motorhome. We pitched up and eventually found water. Levelling blocks definitely needed. We tried to find owner all afternoon, welcome procedurewas none extinctant. We finally found her, grooming her horses and paid our site fees, once found her she was very friendly. We stayed 3 nights, the toilets and shower was not cleaned in this time. I feel this lets the club down. I couldn’t wait to move in to our next stop, to be clean. Road is very close by and no mention of it on website, was very noisy at times, which spoilt the views and peace and quiet.
We had a good few days walking and cycling into Pickering and surrounding areas. The weather was very kind to us.
Friendly cl
Stayed 2 nights 17th and 18th June, our first visit. Owners son gave us a very warm welcome, showed us to our pitch and the facilities. Levelling blocks definately required. Road noise did not really trouble us. Paula friendly and helpful. Do try her home made jam, it is really nice. Enjoyed the animals especially the piglets. We have 2 collie dogs who also enjoyed their stay and walks in the area.
GREAT CL SITE
Just come back from a long weekend stay here and we will definitely be returning. Easy to find and access, lovely welcome from the owners and brilliant views. Didn't use the facilities as we use the ones in our caravan. Field is slightly sloping however blocks and bricks etc can be found in the hedge bottom at the back if you do not bring enough of your own. You can hear the road at the bottom of the field on occasions however this is not something that bothers us as it is far quieter than the one we live on! Only one other caravan on the field when we were there however the field and pitches are very spacious. All in all a fantastic site. Many thanks...
