Great CL

The site is well laid out with good hardstandings.. Whilst quite exposed it has amazing views and we saw some stunning sunsets. The owners gave us a warm welcome and were very helpful when we had a problem with our caravan. We loved our stay at Stonehigh and would highly recommend it to those who love peace, quiet and Orkney!

Great Base for Exploring Orkney

We stayed at Stonehigh for 12 days in September and found it a great base for exploring Orkney.

The site is easily accessed from either St Margaret's Hope or Stromness ferry terminals.

The Co-op in Dounby was about 5 miles away and was well stocked. For Sunday papers, give them a ring to see if they're in before setting off - papers may not be delivered until 1:00pm. Bigger Tesco & Lidl stores were available in Kirkwall. Orkney Fish (seafood suppliers) on a small retail development outside Stromness was a work a visit.

We used the Orkney Explorer pass to get to the main historic sites, but in addition to these, the upper level tour of St Magnus' Cathedral was a must!

The Merkister Hotel outside Dounby was a good place to eat and for great seafood and views over the Pentland Firth, try the Skerries Bistro near Burwick on South Ronaldsay (drive over the Churchill Barriers to get there). For fish and chips head to the Harbour Fry near Kirkwall harbour.

We used Orkney Ferries to get to the islands (they'll reverse you on if you don't fancy doing it yourself) and Northlink to get back (roll on / roll off).

All in all a great holiday and a place, unlike any other, that we were sorry to leave.

Beautiful views

OMG the views are to die for. this site is a real find, Jim was very welcoming helpful, there is a book box available to all guests. although a working farm the access is easy and the site very well kept and maintained. Orkney is a stunning place to visit and as bird watchers, basically heaven on earth. we did manage to see the short eared owls and many birds were visible at the site. for us the winds were dreadful, I think we had the tail end of Hector!, but then that is not Jim's fault, the days were mainly sunny and dry just very windy. I would definitely recommend this site and would visit again, we stayed a week and loved every minute

OMG

This is the most beautiful site I have ever stayed on. It's on the hill side looking over the water to the island of Rousay. We could have sat just looking out of the caravan window for the two weeks it is such an amazing view. The site is laid out well with hard standing for each pitch. You do need levelling blocks but the owner has helpfully placed some large pieces of wood to help on each pitch. It's really just like a club site but smaller. Very neat and tidy and easy to find following the instructions. The owner is friendly and helpful and we even were visited regularly by 'Silver' his very handsome cat who kept us company! We had a wonderful fortnight and totally chilled out. Loved it and can't wait to go back.

Blissfu.l We extended our stay because it was so lovely l May - 9 May

We travelled 500 miles from Lincoln to get to Orkney and we are so glad we did. This site was quiet and had fabulous views. Although it was north it was close to all sorts of places including bird hides of the RSPB. We even saw hen harriers. The site was clean. Orkney is a breezy place so the washing line set up by the owner was brilliant. There was even a metal box on site containing books and dvds in to borrow. I donated a couple I had read. The owner was very pleasant and greeted us warmly. Luckily we had no problems but I am sure if we had he would have helped or pointed us in the right direction. Orcadians are delightful people and we left with heavy hearts. We just did not want to say goodbye. We took our dog and she was made very welcome although we had to keep her on a lead because of the birds. If you cycle there are lovely bike rides too. WE WILL CERTAINLY RETURN John and Phyllis

Next best thing to wild camping

What a beautiful location with views over to Rousay and fields/moorland behind. Owners very welcoming. Pitches are hard standing gravel and well drained. Water, electric provided and disposal for waste water and chemical waste. Otherwise a peaceful "get away from it all" experience. Handy for several historical sites and there are plentiful wildlife spotting opportunities.

A Hidden Gem

It was our intention to wild camp on our first night in Orkney, but unlike most of Scotland this was proving very difficult. To out great surprise and delight we stumbled upon this delightful CL. it comprised of five pitches overlooking a spectacular view of Rousay. There was a note telling arrivals to make themselves comfortable. This CL has everything including hookup, water, chemical loo disposal etc. It even had a washing line which was very useful. The owner arrived later, a very friendly and welcoming gentleman. We wish we had stayed longer as the subsequent campsites we stayed in paled in comparison, and to be honest everywhere in Orkney is within easy driving distance.

A lovely site

We had a fantastic two weeks on this site. It's quiet, well maintained, and has the most fantastic view across to Rousay. Exciting to see hares on the site - one sat and watched us eating our dinner! We were sorry to leave, and hope to return.

Super Site

We stayed for 3 nights at the start of our first visit to Orkney and were made very welcome. The site is in a superb location overlooking the Broch of Gurness and Roussay. The added touch of a communal washing line was very welcome.
